The position we find ourselves in so far this season is dissapointing, to say the least. Of this, there is no doubt. However, there is very little that could have been done about it. The loss of a coach who is very popular with the players, the constant pressure and bad press over ASADA, as well as a squad decimated by injury cannot be expected to have done much more than they have.
Any suggestion that putting in player X or dropping player Y is, essentiallty, re-arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. It may have made a small difference, maybe not. We put in two of our "gun juniors" on the weekend, we still scored zero points. Not to say we shouldn't have played them, they deserved the run, but they made no difference. In the long term, I'm sure they will come good. This is not the point.
The point is, there are battles that can be won and battles that cannot. On the field, I don't think we could have done much to change our circumstances.
Off the field, there is a much bigger battle to be fought. We are under constant assault by the media over ASADA. Where are the NRL in this? Are they stepping in to help, like they have done with Newcastle and the Wests Tigers? No, they are just sitting back, watching it unfold. They still see Cronulla as the weak link and have no intention of doing anyhting to change this.
This is the battle that must be fought. I see constant whinging from so called "supporters", bagging the Club, attacking the players, threatening to tear up their memberships, blah, blah, blah. Boo-hoo. Suck it up, princess.
You are acting exactly the way the NRL want you to. Adding fuel to the fire burning under the Club. If you don't want a Club to support, keep it up, idiot.
This is where the battle must be fought. When we sell more memberships, get bigger crowds and sell more merchandise, we cut down the enemies arguement.
I'm sure there will be the idiots who will scream blue murder about the new board, the coach, the recruitment policy, the players etc. You know what? I don't care. I didn't vote for the new board but what's done is done. Same with ASADA. It is what it is. Whinging about it isn't going to change anything. Get a membership and vote them out, if you think it will make a difference.
What will make a difference is support. I went to the Souths game and watched a seriously outclassed team put up a brave but ultimately inadequate display. Yeah, it sucks watching your team lose. But that's sport. There is a winner and a loser and sometimes you lose alot more than you win. Someone gets the wooden spoon every year.
The more important thing is that I was at my home ground, ten minutes from where I live, watching my local team with lots of my mates around me. That's still a pretty good day out and alot better than the alternative.
I'm sure the usual suspects will get on here and whinge and bitch and moan and call me an idiot and all sorts of other derogatory names. Go for you life, I really don't care. I won't be responding to this thread and I really couldn't care less what people think about it.
You know why? Cos I know I'm right - and so do you, even though you don't want to admit it.
So harden the **** up, put your dummy back in, put a jersey on, go to a game and cheer on your team, win or lose.
If I see you there, maybe we'll have a beer together and talk about how good next year will be. And that's still a pretty good day out.
