There seems to be a fair bit talk in here about how this could benefit the Sharks.
I pose 2 questions that I would like answered by the SF faithfull:
- are the ultimate goals of the FFA and Dave Gallop to co-exist with the NRL?
- how would everyone feel when every time there's a soccer game at Shark Park that they cover up the names of Peter Burns, Monty Porter and Andrew Ettingshausen on the grandstands?
Good questions.
While at the moment I'm sure soccer in Australia is happy to co-exist with the larger football codes I can't believe that is their 'ultimate' goal. They'd be stoked to be even on par with cricket as Australia's summer sport. They're a long way from that and not even in the discussion with the likes of NRL and AFL.
On the second point I'm a bit undecided. I know they go to lengths almost downright disrespectful at Parra Stadium to cover up the rich RL history, as you say chucking a sheet over Ray Price's statue on game day for the Wanderers. But Parramatta are a ****ing disaster so its no surprise they let that happen. Wally Lewis' statue for instance will never have a sheet thrown over it, nor would Laurie at Canberra Stadium. We don't have a statue to worry about yet, but I don't think we should (if it became an issue) go to the lengths to cover up the named sections of our ground.
If we're landlord then I think we can control that fairly in that its the Sharks' ground first and foremost and if you want it covered it'll cost you for those extras.
If we're a "partnership" then - to be fair - they'd have a right to name something after one of their greats.
I wouldn't really care too much if they covered up the names, but it would be totally unnecessary and petty.
They don't change the names of the stands at SCG when a different sports are played, not sure why they'd do it here.
Is there this much anxiety between sports in the USA? Or is it ok to like more than one sport over there? I think the days of people being fully committed to one sport and one sport only are gone.
The USA and the SCG are a different kettle of fish. The SCG is a multi-sport complex with rich history - you're honored to get a booking there and I'd suggest the level of nationwide backlash would be significantly higher were the FFA to request the removal of Don Bradman as compared to ET.
I got no idea what the yanks do. I care even less.
