Lavicka coy on Emmo role

Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka says he'll wait until Brett Emerton returns to Australia before considering the Socceroos star for the A-League club's captaincy.

Emerton, Australia's second most-capped player with 87, has captained his country on two occasions and became a seasoned Premier League veteran while plying his trade with Blackburn Rovers since 2003.

Lavicka and current Sky Blues captain Terry McFlynn both praised Emerton's leadership skills on Friday but Lavicka said it was too early to say if Sydney's new marquee signing was a candidate to take over the armband.

"It's too early (to discuss any change to the captaincy). Firstly I'm going to speak to Emmo when he's coming first time here," Lavicka said.

"Of course we need more than one leader in this squad, because of that example last season - when we missed a couple of senior players, we missed leadership and it was a problem for us last season."

Emerton will link up with the Sydney squad after Australia's FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Thailand and Saudi Arabia, with his likely first outing a pre-season clash with Perth Glory on September 24.

Lavicka was similarly uncertain about what on-field role the versatile Emerton would play, or if he would look at tweaking his formation.

"That's a good question. Now we have to find out the right system and the right spot for him," he said.

"He's a team player first. He's a good quality player and he has plenty of engine and ability to do something special in the attacking half - to create chances and score some goals, as he did in previous years for Blackburn and in Europe too."

Lavicka noted the club has "a commitment to set up the players and team around" Emerton but quickly backtracked when quizzed about whether the side would be structured around Emerton's attacking prowess.

"No. He's a team player, a good quality player - but a team player," Lavicka said.

"I like it. We have other good quality players, we need time to settle and to give players the time to recognise the right way we can play.

"We have time to check everything and set up."

McFlynn said the signing had provided a spark in pre-season training.

"It's been bubbling along in the media for a while, and to be honest we were all hoping that we can get him in," McFlynn said.

"When it was confirmed, the boys were all very excited and buzzing, we've cleared a space for him in the dressing-room already.

"We can't wait to get him here and get him to the training ground and start the hard work with him."

I would pass as a 16 year old haha so not even $10, would be good to watch but I think a good night in watching the first test is better.

Have been watching the A-League for the past two years. Been following it more and more. Nothing else to do in the off season.

He won't be fussed. His little knights & Bennet will be his main focus this year.
How long does he own the Jets for?

Think Fatso has the Jets for as long as he wants them. Another 4 years at least I think. Bennett has work cut out with this rabble down here.

Clive Palmer... WTF?

He has set up a football administration to administer.... nothing.

It will be interesting to see where this all ends up.

Watching Billionaires throw their toys out of the cradle is really quite fun. Too bad that the game will likely suffer as a result.

The suffering of the game is the FFA's fault IMO. They expanded way too fast for the game, they should have focused on getting the founding clubs to be independent and to be able to financial support themselves. Instead they put another team in Melbourne, A team in Nth Qld (folded after 1 season I think), Gold Coast (Folded). A-league was always going to suffer from that point.

On regards to Clive Palmer, it's just funny.

I really dont think there is a market here on the coast for soccer to be honest. It's more a league town and look at the crowds the titans are pulling each week. Soccer doesnt stand a chance

I'm not sure about that AS. The Coast is still growing population wise and being a native Gold Coaster from childhood, I do believe that there is enough there to support a viable team. From what I can see though, it was very badly managed (off the field) and never really made any attempts to fully coonect with the locals and actually get involved on a community level. It's a shame and I do agree with Dier as well that the FFA have not particularly covered themselves with glory in this whole affair either. It somehow seems that soccer in Australia will always be a bit of a nightmare (for those of us who thought that the bad old days might be finally behind us).
Still, go the Socceroos..Brazil 2014 :hoping Anyone fancy going? :)

These ****ing foreign players diving are completely ruining the game in this country, not that it needs any help but they are ****ing ridiculous. If that was the sharks and some prick did something similar to that to cost us a grandfinal I would be ready to riot.

For anyone that missed it:
