Emerton 'signs with Sydney FC'

25 August 2011
AAP & SBS-AAP

Sydney FC is set to unveil Australia star Brett Emerton as its marquee signing today ending weeks of speculation the veteran Socceroos midfielder may return to the A-League.

Emerton, 32, will leave Blackburn Rovers one year early after terminating his contract by mutual consent.

The World Game revealed on Monday Sydney FC was pursuing Emerton and fellow Socceroos stars David Carney and Nathan burns, having missed out on Harry Kewell.

The club is also believed to have been pursuing a 10-match guest playing stint with former Arsenal star Freddie Ljungberg.

Emerton is reported to have signed a three-year deal to fill the Sky Blues' second marquee spot alongside Nicky Carle after passing a medical in Manchester Wednesday (AEST), according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Australia's second most-capped player has overcome a minor hamstring complaint that sidelined him against Aston Villa last weekend, and was back on the park against Sheffield Wednesday in a Carling Cup fixture on Thursday (AEST).

Emerton will make his 248th and final appearance for his only EPL club at Ewood Park against Tim Cahill's Everton this weekend.

Sydney's successful pursuit of Emerton caps a stunning week for the A-League, coming days after Melbourne Victory announced the signing of Harry Kewell.

32 years old.... fmd, sydney are rooted

Better player than Kewell though.

Plus has a lot more to offer in terms of game time as Kewell will spend three quarters of the season out with injury.

Snowman,

You know as well as I do, the only stars the A-League will be able to sign are players over 30.

Most young players who are as good as Emerton is would stay in Europe than take a pay cut to come to Australia.

Snowman,

You don't want us to sign either of them.

Who do you believe Viteslav Lavicka signs then?

Thing with Harry is the only reason I wanted us to get him is because he is Sydney boy.

But now that he has join the filth down south, I now hate him just like I should've when he joined Galatasaray.

Their abilities are irrelevant - the sponsorship deals and the gate takings those 2 players will generate will be massive.

Ps As far as players in the A League go - Kewell>Emerton>Daylight>Everyone else

Happy with what we've got at GCU. Don't need a serial treatment table case.

I dunno man, I reckon Broich and Culina would have something to say about that.

And would van dyke make any premier league teams? let alone championship teams.

Emerton is a walk up start to the national team and most EPL sides. As would harry kewell if he was still playing in england.

Kewell would make half of the premier league teams and when emerton was fit he was a solid player in the EPL.

He is a good player in the A league but can't be compared to kewell and emerton. He came to the A league when he was 26 whereas kewell and emerton are both 32 and helping to give the comp more exposure and interest in australia.

Joshy, Emerton could hardly get a start in a horrible Blackburn side. If he was a walk up start to most EPL sides he would stay there, and Blackburn would of held on to him. He never really was a walk up to most EPL sides.

Again, Broich > any one else in A-league.

I would love to see your list of most EPL sides.

Oh, and same goes for Kewell.
