Kai O’Donnell has been named to make his North Queensland Toyota Cowboys debut in Saturday night’s clash against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

The Airlie Beach product returned to North Queensland for 2025 after stints in Canberra and the UK and immediately impressed Cowboys coaching staff with his intensity at training. O’Donnell registered four NRL appearances for the Raiders in 2020 before departing for England where he starred in a three-season stint for Leigh. The 26-year-old has been named to start in the second row.

The remainder of Todd Payten’s 17 remains the same, with Tom Duffy, John Bateman and Karl Lawton set to make their home debuts for the Cowboys.

Cowboys team to play Sharks:

1. Scott Drinkwater
2. Braidon Burns
3. Jaxon Purdue
4. Viliami Vailea
5. Murray Taulagi
6. Tom Dearden (c)
7. Tom Duffy
8. Jordan McLean
9. Reece Robson
10. Sam McIntyre
11. John Bateman
12. Kai O’Donnell
13. Reuben Cotter (c)

Interchange
14. Karl Lawton
15. Harrison Edwards
16. Griffin Neame
17. Coen Hess

Reserves
18. Jake Clifford
19. Jeremiah Nanai
20. Tom Mikaele
21. Jaxson Paulo
22. Jason Taumalolo

"Jeremiah's an elite attacking player, and he needs to improve some defensive parts of his game, and he's going to get some time in the Q Cup to do that."

Seems a bit strange to name him in #19 after that. Wouldn't be surprised to hear a redemption song on Saturday.

He's also shifted him to the other side of the field to accommodate Bateman.

Oh well good for us if they get some ball in our end of the field

I honestly don’t care if we don’t towel up the weaker sides.

I’d rather us stick to a game plan that initially might even see us not win by as much as we should until we get our heads in auto pilot mode regardless of the score.

The sooner we play to a game plan that works, regardless of who we play will see us start winning the bigger games, including the finals when it counts.

Eg Manly, when they are on, they are on, they look brilliant, but the game v Cowboys, you could see it as clear as day, they got caught up in the whole scoring tries thing & they ended up putting the cue in the rack through over excitement with 20-25 mins to go & failed to score again yet in the first 50 or so minutes they put on 40 plus points.

Like us, they drift in & out of the contest & you’ll get your fair share of chances against them over the course of the game.

Storm & Penrith stick to the basics (game plan) & if you get your chances, take/ice them.

Didn’t storm just have a 46-6 / 10-12 first half second half split?

Am just wondering what Todd Payten's question to his players were:

Who irons your clothes?

How many squares do you use when you wipe?

What direction does the water spin in the southern hemisphere?

I'm picturing that dude in Shrek holding up two fingers saying "pick 3"
