Yes that's true, there's probably an agreed deal already.

However, he still could have wiggled out of it by saying he was misheard etc, and there was no proof otherwise.

Similar to the Gallen/Paea case: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/may/25/cronulla-paul-gallen-dragons-paea
You're probably right. I think it's good that they chose to shut it down completely. There surely would have been a heap of backlash if they'd tried to fight it now, whether that came from virtue signaling or justified outrage.

I'm always a bit dubious when it takes four days to make an apology. No doubt they got legal advice and the like but still.....

Especially when it's not really in line with the original sentiment and hot takes

I hope 8-10 weeks. Regardless of whether you think name calling is that bad (in this case I’m on the side of it being f-ing deplorable), the truth is the game had a milestone event and all anyone is talking about is this ignorant fkhead. 10 weeks will make sure people think twice about it.

Calling a bloke a monkey. Is it really that bad? Is this getting way to much attention than what it warrants?

Probably the wrong audience to ask (we seem pretty white in here?) although our boy Nicho seemed to think so, for whatever that is worth to you.

You could find a indigenous person you don’t know and ask them?

Or better yet go to a work event (bonus points if televised) and call someone Indigenous from another branch department a monkey. If you think you probably wouldn’t want to do that it might answer the question.

Yeah what if her had called him a Peanut? Penguin? Turnip? Would there be outrage?
Doubt it, not aware of those being slurs in any way. Although my dad did get sent away from a junior league game I was playing for calling the ref a peanut.
My dad was the touchy.

I think it Leinu said peanut we never even hear about it.

What happens if he calls him a hottentot?

Its been a slur to them for over a century, used by people with intention to belittle and harm a man for his race and colour of his skin. I’d say it is.

I know a lot of islanders and they have all stated they call everyone animal names. It’s common in their day to day. My mate calls his sister a ****ing walrus because she’s overweight. She laughs it off.

I’m half German, I get called a nazi by people. Big deal. I laugh at it.

I think Bort has kind of hit the nail on the head here with one of his responses above.

Ask yourself if you'd be willing to call an indigenous colleague a monkey during a heated workplace moment just as Spencer did.

However you answer that question is how you're going to feel about this incident. I doubt any more debate will change that.

FOOTY IS BACK!!!
Let's focus on that.

If there was no evidence Spencer is dumber than I thought. There must've been sometimes weighing against him in a "my word against his" case for Roosters to roll over that. Maybe media scrutiny getting a bit much - NRL should've had it wrapped up a lot sooner than next week.

I wouldn't tackle a colleague at work either. Very different environments. Poor comparison.

Yeah well thats you mate. Your ability to shrug it off isn’t shared by everyone, and seeing as that particular slur runs deep in Aboriginal and African history, i’d say its not our place to judge them for how they want to take that insult.

Things get a little more heated on a football field than an office. I never sledged people at work but was a gobby **** when I played sport.

Everyone in the operating theatre wouldn't down tools because its Susan's bday and we're having a morning tea.

If one of your first reactions when things get heated is to say something racist then there's something a bit wrong IMO.

Whether or not a player agrees that it's wrong it doesn't matter, because it's outside accepted behaviour when they've got an NRL contract.

They either need to re-educate themselves or learn to mask their compulsions, otherwise they'll find themselves outside the game. Just like a player who can't overcome a compulsion to try to take players' heads off with a swinging arm.

Not convinced its racist much, if at all. Really depends on the intent. We call kids silly monkeys. We're all shaved apes ffs.
