This isn't a rule for this particular scenario. There is an over-arching law in Rugby League that says that any decision should provide the greatest possible benefit for the non-offending team.

If the error occurs in the field of play --> always a scrum
If the error occurs in the in goal --> always 20m tap
If an error occurs in the field of play then the ball goes dead/touch in goal --> greatest advantage to the other team is a 20m tap

If has nothing to do with being 1m from the try-line or on a contest. If you knock on 25m out and then pick up the ball and kick it dead in disgust... it's a 20m restart, since that is better for the other team than a 25m scrum.

The reason people get confused is because NRL refs pick and choose when to apply this law. Quite often there is a knock on, a player in front dives on it, and they rule a knock on. It should be a penalty 100% of the time.

Also, player in front of kicker tackles someone high or in mid air... they give a penalty for the tackle. Technically they should give a penalty for the offside, since that mark would be farther up field (where the player should have been rather than where he made the tackle).

Ok, so whenever the opposition makes an error against us, then I say we claim “the greatest possible benefit” by requesting, no, demanding, a try to be awarded to us every single time under this law/ruling.

or a premiership, that would have been handy prior to 2016

not that I'm intentionally diminishing the prestige of the AMCO Cup

Had a great weekend in the big smoke to see My Beloved Sharkies, a long time between drinks. Although I only got there at half time for the first game, still cheering all the tries and big hits in the first game. Love to keep the Rabbits fans quiet, some leaving with 20 to go 😁 I was really pleased to see quite a lot of Sharkies supporters. Great to see the Fellas go to the Sharks bays for photos and autographs etc. at the end of the match. Most of all, ****in awesome to have a win!!

other than 9s it’s been 18 years since sharks played here right? Or am I forgetting something?
Was a great day - managed to skip massive line into Camfield for a few pre game beers then both games were great, especially seeing sharks win!
Just needed to be a rectangular stadium and it would have been even better!

Hope that doesn't work both ways with the amount of mistakes we make!

Yeah 2005 I think. I was there, at what is now HBF park, before it had the face lift for the Glory and I remember we won that day. Before that was 1997 at the WACA against the Reds, won also. I dont think they will ever give us games at HBF again. SoO I understand (announced for '25 and '28 in Perth) however I'd love to go back to the smaller rectangle ground.

Many of the one off games still go to the rectangle, this being a double header though was likely to draw a much bigger crowd - even a lot of fans of other teams or only passing league interest were willing to make the effort to go since you got two games out of it
SoO being a bigger draw needs Optus too - really need a 30-40k one not 20k
