Can you please explain. I can’t see!
I'm not colourblind and can't work it out anyway!
:ROFLMAO: Yeah- it's confusing because it doesn't actually have anything to do with the numbers shown at the top.

It's the average amount of time (seconds) between when a head knock occurs and when the team staff or independent doctor takes action to get them off the field (round by round).

It shows that back in the early rounds of 2021 it was taking up to 5 minutes. For 2023 the average is under 2 minutes, and it is not more than 2 1/2 minutes for any round since round 1, 2022.

Obviously 5 minutes to take action isn't good enough. If the bloke is Cam McInnes or Toby Rudolf, he could potentially have made another 10 tackles in that time.

In the NRLW game on the weekend there was a great example of how defensive issues at the ruck can make edge defence look silly.

Here's the whole play. Most fans would look at this and blame the edge. I'll break it down after.

Three Sharks go in on the ball runner, two miss and the third makes a tackle but doesn't win the contact. A fourth Sharks player arrives but the ref calls her off. The Broncos get a super quick play the ball with only one marker in place.

Sharks have just four defenders on the edge, one of whom is Quincy Dodd, who missed the tackle and hasn't made it back onside yet.

The marker has to hold, Dodd can't put inside pressure on, and the fullback doesn't take any action to resolve the situation. The three defenders on the right have been hung out to dry.

All the Broncos ballplayer needs to do here is execute a 5 on 3 against a defensive line putting no pressure on her, and she's good enough to do it.

A fan watches this and says "our right edge defence sucks".

A coach watches this and says "our ruck defenders **** the bed there".

They didn't do themselves any favours from the dropout either... I think it's worth adding that almost the whole team was on the right side of the field and ignoring the numbers. The defensive line never recovered.

Yeah true. Poor kick. Definitely looks from the setup that the plan was to drive it to her left. If they get three in the tackle and slow it down though, they put out the fire.

Cheers Burgo.

Also, nice work getting the graphics in there.
Cheers mate - have done a bit of work on optimizing the format and size of these GIFs, so now I can actually inline edit them without blowing the size out too much. I think having pause and the numbers helps demonstrate the point.

Just a dumb question.
If Peptides are a performance enhancing drug. Does a needle to get a player back on the field fall in to that category?

As in a pain-killing injections? Cortisone injections during games are prohibited by WADA. It is allowed during recovery but approval is required.

Any needles players are having these days during the games I assume are local anaesthetic (e.g. numb the area and stitch it up), or some other family of drugs.

As for pain-killers in general, I think the distinction is that while pain killers have the potential to improve an athlete's performance on the day, over time the repeated use of pain killing meds have a detrimental impact on muscle tissue. I.e. You can't gain a physical advantage that you wouldn't have otherwise had over someone else by using Voltaren for 3 months in the off-season, even though by reducing pain/inflammation it will likely help you maintain your current levels of strength/activity.

It's a grey area for sure though.

Is Holmes a little lucky to be named in that squad, or is he the incumbent?
You mean this guy? ;)

Incumbent winger.
