Imagine waiting all off season for round 1 and your team has the bye

Would suck. Kind of useless getting it in the first 6-7 rounds I would have thought.
Yeah you'd want to be at least middle third of season I reckon, halfway or later even better.
Depends on origin fixtures too I guess, if there will be split rounds that cause more byes or not.

Maybe that is the punishment for the spoon? Round 1 bye?

I wish there were more consequences for finishing last then just a wooden kitchen utensil.

Letting down your fans who are pumped for the new season by being told your not required for round 1 would be a good start. ;) ;) :D :D

Guaranteed mid-ladder finish after Rnd 1, some teams would kill for that

Not a bad idea at first glance. Wonder if it might be a bit unfair though. Would imagine the first round would be one of the higher viewed games of the normal season. Could have a bit of an impact on their wallet, making a **** team even shitter

Off the top of my head I can't think of a more 'fair' option though.
NRL wouldn't want any top teams or big market teams to cop the first round bye, taking turns won't work as there will be 18+ teams before everyone has had a turn anyway so that's not fair.
Draw isn't random or even so NRL has full control over who gets bye unless they put it in the hands of the teams themselves by saying spooner gets an extra week of preseason.

More incentive to not finish last then. ;) :D

James Tedesco cleared over racial slur allegations, still cops fine

NSW Blues and Sydney Roosters skipper James Tedesco has been fined $10,000 by the NRL over a late-night incident at Bondi Beach.
It had been alleged the champion fullback directed a racial comment towards a woman of Vietnamese descent which forced the NRL’s integrity unit to launch an investigation.

The Daily Telegraph understands the allegations of racism could not be proven.
However he was fined for drunken behaviour.

The woman at the centre of the allegation and her sister, who took to social media to make the original claims, were interviewed.
Other players in the group with Tedesco also spoke to integrity unit investigators.
