Melbourne basically got the best of the Hunter Mariners and the Western Reds. Throw in Glenn Lazarus, Tawera Nikau and Chris Anderson.

Probably had the best intro of any new team in history, but I’m not sure you could call it a leg up

When the NRL was formed, there was a discretionary fund each year of $4-5m. The ARL could allocate 50% and News Ltd could allocate 50%.

News gave their 50% each year to the Storm. The other 15 clubs shared the rest.

This was for non-player expenses. It wasn’t extra cap money. It was $2m+ each year in cash provided by the league.
No conflict of interest there....

Yep - the other thing much later on (recently) was the ridiculous deals they let Mebourne, and then the Roosters do - within the cap system. Slater, Smith, Cronk (Roosters) and Tedesco were all paid by NRL sponsors outside the cap. The NRL’s justification was that “these are star players, and would be paid that much anywhere, so it’s OK if those teams do it”.
And they wonder why fans hate this.

Jesus this bloke is a *******, can't stand him.

South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou made the tough call to replace rookie halfback Lachlan Ilias during the club’s heavy loss to the Dragons during the last round of the NRL and, not surprisingly, Ilias’ agent, Braith Anasta, wasn’t happy about it.

Almost straight after the decision was made, Anasta let his displeasure be known via a text message to club chief executive Blake Solly and football manager Mark Ellison.

The speed of Anasta’s response, rather than the content of his message, is what is unusual here. Most managers won’t give their input until the game is well and truly over.

After a wonderful weekend of International footy... the NRL is scrapping the rep round. Nine wants all 3 origins on Wednesdays, so the dedicated rep weekend is gone for 2023 and beyond.

Surely tv numbers were still good?
Sill same amount of total NRL games but like three extra international games instead of just origin

I think the issue is that agents are having too much input in to day to day team stuff. This was the issue at the Warriors a little while ago. Drop a bloke, agent calls and says that if you don’t bring him back it is going to hurt negotiations with a different bloke.
I also don't like, in the case of Braith, the position of power he holds in the media to also be a player agent.
Seems to be right up against the line of 'conflict of interest'... if not over it.
