Don't they refer to the whole soccer world cup as the finals?
Loads of other teams participated already and didn't make finals, those games were probably mostly if not all available to watch too

Brings in more money and fans but you don't want it becoming like the Rugby League WC where this is a bunch of low quality games of minnow teams getting destroyed - qualifying for the WC should be difficult and prestigious, an achievement in just making it through

However you could argue for more teams or at least a change to the qualifying process when a team like Italy misses out but lesser teams make it though with relatively easier qualifying. The tournament isn't so much all the best teams from around the world as it is the best teams from various regions and conferences around the world and not every team from Europe for instance can make it through - there are not enough spots.
I just think they're going to dilute the spectacle a bit. The whole qualifying process in itself is a great lead-up and an event in itself.

Have 16 groups of three where the top 2 go through....not a fan.

So no more 9 pm games… not dedicated enough to watch 2am and leave for work at 6am. Feel a little lost as a casual World Cup fan.

48 teams basically kills off the credibility of the qualifiers. A few extra spots for everyone.

Australia will benefit, though. You’d think Asia would get at least a couple of extra spots

The way the Asian teams have performed they probably deserve a couple of those spots.

Yeah I agree, definitely not a fan.

Typical money grab from FIFA.

I think the current procedure is pretty good. I agree with everyone else.

Just watched the highlights - will watch the game later but even from the highlights it looked like we were playing much better and were more composed.

Great goal by Leckie and an awesome result. Well done boys! 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Watched the replay this morning. Wow, just wow. Anyone not moved by that isn't really a sports fan.
