I haven't checked but someone told me tickets were going for around $50 at the moment. Hardly unaffordable.

I think this is just about the only combination that would result in a non-legit sell out.

If any one of the Sydney teams were in it, it would probably sell out.

Newcastle and Canberra would both bring a tonne of support. (moreso Newy)

Even Brisbane and the Warriors would bring a heap of support.

Apparently for the major sports radio station in Melbourne this is the first year they are broadcasting the NRL Grand Final live over the airwaves - So much for open minded punters from the sports capital of the world...

While casual Victorian interest in the Melbourne Storm may be on the rise and they have their select hardcore supporter base I think it's sometimes easy to forget how much AFL dominates and dwarfs everything else down there and how much of a battle the NRL still has ahead of them despite having one of the best modern teams down there. We all know how hard it is just to find a venue televising league in Melbourne. It's remarkable the Storm get the turnout's they do and their fans can't all be expat QLDrs

I know Sydney has had the Swans team since the early 80's but as a comparison it's not hard to find a swans or neutral teams game on radio or free to air/fox

I think Cows fans will have to flock into ANZ in the droves (flights makes it hard) to have any chance of a respectable crowd because there are only so many Storm fans out there whether they wish to travel or not. There was a fair sea of purple jersey's on the south side of the stadium in the GF against us last year though it won't be enough.

Brissy vs. Cows GF in 2015 was a strong crowd but that was also before North QLD has won their first premiership

Gards, Storm average home crowd this year is 18k. Swans average home crowd in 2001 (their 20th year in Sydney) was 28k.

Swans average crowd this year was 33k and they lost their first six games.

And like you say, that's with Melbourne having an unbelievably good team.

And Sydney has a second AFL team these days as well in GWS so it's not like the Swans even have the whole market to themselves

What i would do is this.

Early in the season release all public tickets, let's say 62k (could be more could be less) to members of the 16 clubs for sale, so 4k per club.

As it becomes mathematically impossible for teams to make the 8, sale to them stops.

At any point throughout the season members can get a refund minus a small admin fee. Those tickets get reallocated to the pool.

End of last round, all unbought tickets available to the members of finals teams. This gets wittled down and reallocated when teams are eliminated.

Maybe along the way you release a portion to the general public but look after members first.

Haven't given it too much thought so this maybe completeltycompletely stupid.

The AFL could sell their GF three times over. We can't. That's fine but take it as an opportunity to look after people that genuinely follow the game.....members.

I like the concept HB but I don't think the NRL would ever go for something that could cost them sales by refunding tickets to go back into a pool - they might not ever get that sale back and they probably bank on a portion of neutral fans making up the crowd numbers on GF day.

Even if they wanted to go with a process like this they would completely **** up the admin/IT side of it as it's somewhat complex

Yeah true. They could release tickets to the public though along the way depending on how ticket sales to members were going. You'd also need to have a cut-off for when members could get a refund.

Probably is too complicated though.

I think holding as many tickets till the last minute is best. As I said above, this combination of teams is the worst possible. Most years this wouldn't happen. I'd much rather the stadium was packed with people that are emotionally invested in the teams playing. Neutrals add money but very little else.

18,000 average AAMi park crowd would HALVE with a mid or bottom tier team down here ( much like the Swans did after initial success). Also the Storm do themselves no favours in a number of areas (Think largely ignoring/lack of support for Local VRL League and picking/playing a hub of "local" Juniors out of Qld, Private Ownership etc ).There are many more associated reasons I could go into, but won't bore anyone here. The Junior Centre of Excellence I think Vic Gov have pledged would be a start, but the players grab at the NRL and diminishing Grassroots dollar and its effects on administration/participation filters right thru down here. Would love the opportunity for a half hour Coffee with Roy Masters for an open discussion, however he is very close to the Storm and i'm not sure a lot of filtering would not go on, with any proposed expose.

while the NRL has had just one Sydney team in its showpiece game since 2014.

That is such a stupid stat. That's like on January 2nd saying it hasn't rained all year long

Still can't believe I got free tickets for every sydney final including the grand final. Honestly it's embarrassing and a massive issue for the game.

Who's everyone's tip for the CC medal?

I'm going JT 3 in a losing side.

After the stories in the press comparing Billy Slater to Clive Churchill, even from Mrs Churchill herself. I'd say that unless he has a stinker, it's going to go to Slater. It's a political award these days, doesn't necessarily go to the best on ground anymore which is a shame.
