Bulldogs Breach Salary Cap

Canterbury are reportedly in breach of the NRL salary cap to the tune of about $100,000.

The Seven Network on Wednesday evening reported the Bulldogs, some months ago, had discovered that they were over the cap for 2017 and alerted the NRL.

Canterbury face a probable hefty fine over the breach.

The original figure is believed to have been up to $160,000.

Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle, however, has told Seven News she's confident it will be less than $100,000 by the time final numbers are crunched within a few weeks.

By self-reporting to the NRL, it is anticipated Canterbury will be fined an amount equivalent to the final breach amount, rather than being hit with a possible deduction of premiership points.

So an NRL team can sign up big, tell the NRL they are over so they only have to pay a fine with no premiership points deducted and they can then win a premiership with a Kangaroos squad.

I can now see what the Storm did wrong all those years ago. They didn't self-report themselves!

The Broncos perfected the cap rort few years back.

Totally destroyed the cap limit, and when the NRL came asking questions, they had all board members resign. Its a rule that ex-employees that no longer work within the club can't be compelled to give evidence. So with nobody to interview, the NRL just walked away.

The perfect crime that so far has lead to zero premierships.

Calm down, ladies. I hate the Dogs as much as anyone but its $160K possibly widdled down to $100K. Hardly the difference between getting SBW or not.

But at the same time, they either knowingly exceeded the cap limit or their number-crunchers need to go back to primary school.

Either way they are exhibiting symptoms of a lack of professionalism which is bringing the game into disrepute. The NRL should make them relocate to Greenacre.

I wonder whether they will be permitted to play next season with an increased cap or whether they'll be forced to shed a player.

Yeah I don't think Sharks fans should be getting too riled up about this. Haven't we paid out 2 similar fines in the last 5 or so years?

Yep clubs having minor breaches of the cap is a pretty common occurrence. Nothing to see here.

I think there should be a 200k buffer on the cap. When it comes to injuries and player promotion these things cant always be planned for. If u go over, that amount must be paid back to all other clubs evenly (that arent over).

Just realised Easts are taking their home game against us to Gosford which is a 3pm Saturday game. That sucks, I love doing a pub crawl pre and post game in town.

The NRL is set to replace match bans with fines for minor offences, like grade one charges

THE NRL is set to change the judiciary rules so incidents like Wade Graham’s careless high tackle on Johnathan Thurston that cost him a NSW jersey will result in a whack in the wallet instead of a match ban.

For years NRL players and coaches have been calling for this change to stop players missing big games like grand finals and State of Origins for grade-one offences.

And finally it looks like the NRL is ready to act and introduce a fining system like the one that is already used in the English Super League.

It is understood the NRL’s Competition Committee will put forward a recommendation for 2017 that only needs the ARL Commission to sign-off on so it can be introduced.

In Graham’s case it was actually carry-over points from a previous charge that eventually denied the Cronulla backrower his Origin debut for the must-win game in Brisbane.

Wade Graham missed game two of the 2016 series after he was suspended. Picture Craig Greenhill Dragons forward Tyson Frizell’s accidental contact with a referee that resulted in a one-game ban would also likely fall into the category more suitable for a fine rather than a suspension.

Ivan Cleary, who is working as a consultant to the NRL’s football department, said the issue was discussed at this week’s coaches conference and was widely supported.

Cleary explained fines instead of suspensions would be used for incidents that aren’t deemed to be completely against the spirit of the game or that aren’t going to cause major injury.

The Competition Committee is also looking at an amendment to the controversial shoulder charge ruling so there won’t a repeat of the Jack Wighton fiasco next year.

The NRL’s match review committee created a storm when Wighton was pinged for a shoulder charge after Michael Ennis had earlier been allowed to escape punishment for a similar incident.

That ended in embarrassment for the NRL when the judiciary exonerated Wighton to play in Canberra’s qualifying final.

The fining system has been in place in the Super League for some time and earlier this year Newcastle coach Nathan Brown suggested the NRL adopt it as well.

“I know we have to police foul play but we should also be doing what we can to encourage leaving players on the field,” Brown said in July.

“In England where I last coached, that type of grade one charge ended up being a fine.

“The player actually got fined rather than miss a game. Here, when a player gets suspended, the club is the one that wears the brunt of it as well.”

Can the Bulldogs honestly be fined for being over the cap when the season hasn't started yet?

Eels over the cap for 5 years, NRL struggled to punish them.

Dogs over the cap for -0.3 years, we're talking fines and competition points.

I know they'll struggle to get under before kick off, but at least they aknowledge the problem and are trying to rectify it before it effects the comp. The NRL should buy them a present.
