I will, like every year, be cheering for the Blues.

But my brain tells me Queensland.

Gallen out of Origin opener

THE week of Paul Gallen has gone from bad to worse with the NSW forward ruled out of Wednesday night's State of Origin in Melbourne.

Gallen had been in doubt all week with a shoulder injury suffered last weekend against St George Illawarra. A devastated Gallen told teammates he would step aside for fellow Test forward Anthony Laffranchi after failing to complete training today, giving the Blues three full days to prepare without disruption.

Gallen is the second Test forward forced out of Craig Bellamy's new-look side but the addition of Gold Coast's Laffranchi should not weaken the Blues. "Gal is a big loss to the team. We play a similar role, but I won't go out there and do what Paul Gallen does,'' said Laffranchi.

It’s a bitter blow for the Sharks captain who last week was fined $10,000 by the NRL in regards to alleged racial remarks targeted at Dragons forward Mickey Paea.

It’s likely he will lose the captaincy over the incident at a Cronulla board meeting on Tuesday. The NSW coaching staff deemed Gallen unfit for Origin I following a training session this morning.

"We knew he had a sore shoulder all week but he trained strongly yesterday. Obviously he may have pulled up a bit sore today,'' Laffranchi said. "He tried to get through the session but had a bit of trouble there. I was filling in as per normal. He couldn't finish the session.

"He addressed the whole team ... I let him train as much as he could, hoping he could get through. I feel for the guy. I'm sure he'll bounce back if the shoulder's right and I'm sure he'll feature again.''

Bellamy hasn't decided whether Laffranchi or Penrith's Luke Lewis, who replaced suspended Glenn Stewart, will start at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday but the Titans star is determined to make the most of his second chance at the Blues.

"Initially it was hard and disappointing,'' he said of being overlooked. "I wanted nothing more than NSW to win, especially game one. They picked a great team initially. Still now we've got a great squad here together.

"Throughout the whole series, if we use 19 guys we've all put our contribution in.''

Gallen's aggression is the biggest loss to the NSW side, but Laffranchi said there were enough tough players in the side to worry the experienced Queenslanders. "We're all in it together. Once you get a team working for each other,'' he said.

"Don't get me wrong. Gal is that type of player, the bloke you love playing with and the one you hate playing against. Externally, people have their own opinions. The Queenslanders have their own opinion, they've got a group of guys who have been together for a while. But internally, we're pretty comfortable with where we're at.''

New South Wales lock Paul Gallen has been ruled out of next Wednesday’s State of Origin series opener with a shoulder injury.

The Sharks star couldn’t get through this morning’s training session and has now been officially ruled out of Wednesday’s game at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.

The Gold Coast’s Anthony Laffranchi will come into the NSW 17, while Penrith’s Luke Lewis was also a late inclusion in the squad this week to replace the suspended Glenn Stewart.

"Gal is a big loss to the team. We play a similar role, but I won't go out there and do what Paul Gallen does," said Laffranchi.

"We knew he had a sore shoulder all week but he trained strongly yesterday. Obviously he may have pulled up a bit sore today.

"He tried to get through the session but had a bit of trouble there. I was filling in as per normal. He couldn't finish the session.

"He addressed the whole team ... I let him train as much as he could, hoping he could get through. I feel for the guy. I'm sure he'll bounce back if the shoulder's right and I'm sure he'll feature again."

Bellamy hasn't decided whether Laffranchi or Penrith's Luke Lewis, who replaced suspended Glenn Stewart, will start at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday but the Titans star is determined to make the most of his second chance at the Blues.

"Initially it was hard and disappointing," he said of being overlooked.

"I wanted nothing more than NSW to win, especially game one. They picked a great team initially. Still now we've got a great squad here together.

"Throughout the whole series, if we use 19 guys we've all put our contribution in."

It hasn’t been a good week for Gallen, who was fined $10,000 on Monday for racial vilification over on-field remarks made against St George Illawarra forward Mickey Paea.

He is believed to be a strong chance of losing the captaincy of the Sharks over the incident.

Gal is a big loss to the team. I won't go out there and do what Paul Gallen does. Paul Gallen's replacement Anthony Laffranchi

New South Wales lock Paul Gallen has withdrawn from next Wednesday's opening State of Origin clash because of a shoulder injury.

Gallen had been under an injury cloud since entering the Blues' camp on Tuesday and he was unable to complete this morning's training session.

He has been replaced by fellow Test and Gold Coast Titans forward Anthony Laffranchi for game one against Queensland.

A devastated Gallen told team-mates he would step aside after failing to complete training.

"Gal is a big loss to the team. We play a similar role, but I won't go out there and do what Paul Gallen does," said Laffranchi.

"We knew he had a sore shoulder all week but he trained strongly yesterday. Obviously he may have pulled up a bit sore today.

"He addressed the whole team... I let him train as much as he could, hoping he could get through. I feel for the guy. I'm sure he'll bounce back if the shoulder's right and I'm sure he'll feature again."

It is the second forced change for the Blues, with bench second rower Glenn Stewart ruled out after being suspended by the NRL judiciary for a dangerous throw.

His place in the squad was taken by Penrith utility Luke Lewis.

New South Wales coach Craig Bellamy is still to determine whether Lewis or Laffranchi will run on for the Blues.

"Initially it was hard and disappointing," Laffranchi said of being initially overlooked.

"I wanted nothing more than NSW to win, especially game one. They picked a great team initially. Still now we've got a great squad here together.

"Throughout the whole series, if we use 19 guys we've all put our contribution in."

NSW lock Paul Gallen has been ruled out of Wednesday's State of Origin series opener against Queensland due to a shoulder injury.

Gallen has been under an injury cloud since entering the camp last Tuesday and his place will be taken by fellow Test forward Anthony Laffranchi, who joined the Blues camp on Thursday.

It is the second forced change to the NSW side after fellow Test forward Glenn Stewart was suspended by the NRL judiciary on Wednesday.

Stewart's place has since been taken by Penrith utility Luke Lewis.

Gallen's withdrawal caps one of the worst periods in the Cronulla captain's career with his NRL club in turmoil and his own leadership position under review following claims of racial abuse one week ago.

NSW coach Craig Bellamy has yet to decide who will take Gallen's place in the starting side with both Lewis and Laffranchi vying for the run-on role.

I honestly have no idea, its going to be a great game to watch. Anyone could win this one. Gallen not playing hurts the side though.

Real loss for NSW as well as another bad thing to happen to Gallen. You would have to think he will be there in game 2 though, unless NSW blow QLD off the park.

NSW's quest for State of Origin redemption has been rocked by the loss of Test forward and enforcer Paul Gallen to a shoulder injury.
A devastated Gallen told teammates he would step aside for fellow Test forward Anthony Laffranchi after failing to complete training on Saturday, giving the Blues three full days to prepare without disruption.

Gallen is the second Test forward forced out of Craig Bellamy's new-look side but the addition of Gold Coast's Laffranchi should not weaken the Blues.

“Gal is a big loss to the team. We play a similar role, but I won't go out there and do what Paul Gallen does,” said Laffranchi.

“We knew he had a sore shoulder all week but he trained strongly yesterday. Obviously he may have pulled up a bit sore today.

“He tried to get through the session but had a bit of trouble there. I was filling in as per normal. He couldn't finish the session.

“He addressed the whole team ... I let him train as much as he could, hoping he could get through. I feel for the guy. I'm sure he'll bounce back if the shoulder's right and I'm sure he'll feature again.”

Bellamy hasn't decided whether Laffranchi or Penrith's Luke Lewis, who replaced suspended Glenn Stewart, will start at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday but the Titans star is determined to make the most of his second chance at the Blues.

“Initially it was hard and disappointing,” he said of being overlooked.

“I wanted nothing more than NSW to win, especially game one. They picked a great team initially. Still now we've got a great squad here together.

“Throughout the whole series, if we use 19 guys we've all put our contribution in.”

Gallen's aggression is the biggest loss to the NSW side, but Laffranchi said there were enough tough players in the side to worry the experienced Queenslanders.

“We're all in it together. Once you get a team working for each other,” he said.

“Don't get me wrong. Gal is that type of player, the bloke you love playing with and the one you hate playing against.

“Externally, people have their own opinions. The Queenslanders have their own opinion, they've got a group of guys who have been together for a while. But internally, we're pretty comfortable with where we're at.”

The disappointment of missing the Origin opener compounds perhaps the darkest period in Gallen's short but illustrious career.

His Cronulla club is embroiled in scandal and turmoil while his captaincy is under review for a racial slur in a game last week which attracted a $10,000 fine from the NRL.

“I can't comment on Gal's mental situation,” said Laffranchi.

“Mentally he's a tough guy. There was no mental lapse around the camp.”
