A press release about steroid use from Sami Chamoun piqued our interest when it landed on our desk recently. Initially we thought it was from the sponsor at the centre of the NRL's investigation into allegations Cronulla breached their salary cap with under-the-table payments. However, further investigation found that the Sami Chamoun of Serious Supplements fame is a different person altogether.
Nevertheless, the findings of his survey of 279 gym-goers is interesting reading. More than half of respondents believe elite athletes are on steroids, while a quarter admitted to steroid or peptide use in the past 12 months.
''Athletes have long set the cultural tone for what it means to be an 'Australian man' and the growing list of heavily muscled sports stars with washboard abs, who have admitted drug use, are clearly influencing muscle-building behaviours,'' he said.
