Bennett proves to be as evasive as his fiery Dragons

Dragons 38 Sharks 0

THERE was a compelling contest at WIN Stadium last night, but it did not involve Cronulla and St George Illawarra.

The home side scored seven tries to nil in what proved to be an unhappy homecoming for Trent Barrett. The Sharks didn't look like troubling the scorers as their winless run at Wollongong extended into a 21st year.

But what did it all mean? What to make of the teams at opposite ends of the ladder? Afterwards, the press turned to Wayne Bennett for answers.

His thoughts on Matt Cooper, who wound back the clock to score two tries and engineered several others? Bennett: ''Wasn't bad.''

What about Darius Boyd? Was that his best game? Bennett: ''He wasn't bad either, was he?''

And what about Cooper's combination with three-try hero Brett Morris? Perhaps something for the NSW selectors to ponder? Bennett: ''Could be.''

Are the Dragons the best team in the comp? Bennett: ''I don't know about that. No idea.''

And so it went. It was classic parry and thrust, a much more lively exchange than the one that preceded it on the turf. Thankfully, the Dragons were much more expansive than their coach. They scored their opening two tries down Cronulla's left edge, beautiful sweeping movements from one side of the field to the other. The Sharks finally reinforce the left flank and were duly scored upon on their right. Brilliant.

''Their players one to five - their fullback, two centres and two wingers - outclassed our players in those same jumpers," Ricky Stuart lamented. ''They were just so dominant. They were playing against kids.''

Representative selectors would have been running the rule over both teams ahead of the naming of the Test and City-Country teams today. Plenty of Dragons thrust their name under their noses. Boyd was everywhere, a common denominator in the majority of his side's tries.

So too was Cooper, who issued a late challenge for one of the four centre spots to be read out this afternoon. Jamie Soward, Michael Weyman, Neville Costigan, Ben Creagh and Dean Young did their prospects no harm either.

It wasn't all good news for the home side. Another rep hopeful, Beau Scott, hobbled off with a medial strain in the 47th minute. He will be out for four to six weeks.

Stuart felt for former Steeler Barrett, who is likely to retire at the end of the season. ''For Trent to come back here in what is likely to be his last game on this ground, I'm disappointed in that regard for Baz as well,'' he said.

"He doesn't need to be playing in that sort of scoreline.''

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA 38 (B Morris 3 M Cooper 2 N Costigan J Nightingale tries J Soward 5 goals) bt CRONULLA 0 at WIN Stadium. Referee: Tony De Las Heras, Jason Robinson. Crowd: 15,779.

Sharks get Dragoned

I dont know how you guys feel, but I thought (stupid of me) that after last weeks game and also doing the eels a little time before that, we were in with a chance.
But they just dont have the kill in them, is there something underlying that we dont know about happening in the team.
I went to bed at the 49th min frustrated,angry, I think I need counciling,,help
There is no excuses for the way we played.

Don't give me that **** mate. If you havent read my posts clearly I give it plenty of thought. 80% of our side just aint up to first grade standard. After that performance tonight there has to be changes. Simple really.

The biggest problen with making wholesale changes is that the guys coming in aren't up to 1st grade either! there are only 3 players performing at the same level week in week out Gal, Morris, Snow, then the odd player that plays well but not up to there best Doug, Toups, Fergo, Gordon, the rest are a mixed bag of lollies who knows what you will get, you may replace Stapo but for who Kelly? You can replace Smith for Porter but I don't think you gain anything there as no half in the game that was going to play well behind our forward pack performance last night. Stick needs to get the players up every week!!!, It did not help that we got refereed out of the game in the 1st 15mins, and that is probably the most common thing about our season to date the refs just don't give the Sharks a fair shake. it sounds like Im crying ,but just have a think about the ref perfomances in our games and the number 50/50 calls that have gone our way, it must be about 5%-10% even Daly made mention of it.

considering how far over the cap the Dragqueens are (one can only assume)

, And how far under the cap the Sharks are

I think the result speaks for itself.

Dont be too hard on the Sharks, I was impressed that they kept trying all game.

One change necessary. Gallen has to be the skipper. He plays with passion and committment and is our only leader on the field. Barrett is not a good captain!

I dont think that is an issue, he can still lead and inspire his players without having the C next to his name,

barrett is not a good player

It's symptomatic of recruiting players who have no real passion for the sharks - they're playing for a cheque, nothing else. We are falling so far behind in skill levels and talent that I fear it will take an eternity to rebuild to a level that is actually competitive. It took 10 years for Souths to attract good players - but they had deep pockets thanks to Rusty. What have we got?

i nearly cryed with 10 minutes to go and im 18 years old.
i know that in years time will be a better side but think we should buy some new players
38 nil we didn't even score our defence was good but we need to put ET and miller back in the team.

Guys and girls, I know last nights game was a shocker, I was pretty depressed by the display we put in, but we have to get over it and move on.

There's not much point playing the blame game at this stage, the team we've got is what we've got. Same goes for the coach.

The main thing to remember is that we supporters whether we win or lose. I was equally devastated after the game against the Bronco's but remember, we came back and put a good win on against the Knights.

The Dragons played almost perfect football for the first sixty minutes or so last night and with a big leg up from the refereeing, kept us out of the game. Everything that could go their way did so and we did ourselves no favours by putting our heads down and forgetting to concentrate on the basics.

There are some positives still to be gleaned from last nights disaster; Vave showed he is a future star, Snowden seems to get stronger each game and Gallen never, ever gives in. If only some of the other boys had his heart!

We just have to write that one off, turn around and start afresh against the Panthers after the bye. I think we can put in another display like we did against the Knights and score another win.

Hope to see a big crowd turn out and support the Club, we can only improve after last nights game!

i dont care what anyone says ricky has forgoten how to get the best out of his players. he used be be the hardest coach if anyone didnt play well they new it. all he does now is say they put in a good effort nothing is changing. i like ricky but he needs to look at a old tape of himself and demand the best from his players again

I know we have it in us to win but I am expecting a slaughtering. I can just see us really putting in a good 5-10 mins of basic footy, we make a drop or give away a penalty, Brett Morris or someone scores and then they score again 5 mins later and we get smashed.

That shouldnt happen as last week they really put in, but I am just a bit worried as I dont think we are ready to play a team of this quality yet. If we had a second win in a row under our belt before we played them then I'd be alot more optimistic.

Your prediction turned out to be pretty right.
