All donations are good... I don't care about the method by which I receive them!

That's the plan... I'll organise it... just having issues with massive amounts of work at the moment.

Perhaps what we do is ask for pledges from people here... and then we put in bids depending on how much we can get pledged. If we win the Auction then everybody who has pledged then deposits the money into the SF Paypal account.

All good?

I'll start the ball rolling with a pledge of $50

PS: El Loco. Can you make a call to DI and run the idea by him for me? Cheers!

i am in count me in for 50 let me know when you want it and how to send it

i dare say you'd need the cash IF we win the auction yeh? just keep me up to date on here i'll check regularly.

really good thing you've come up with here

I'll pledge $100. Paypal is fine for me.

If we are coming up just short or something then I could possibly put in a bit more.

Well done Fitz, you are doing a good thing mate.

does anyone know why he was given the kicking duties? that was an awsome kick from the sideline but covs was still on the field, does that mean hes planning for life after covell or is he just a better goal kicker than covell

which is weird considering covell is left footed and the prefered side for lefties is the right side

i also think that was a set piece, ruined by the incompetence of the refs to discuss what we were up to in ear shot of the storm..

How Porter played through the pain (The Courier Mail)

How Scott Porter played through the pain
Phil Rothfield
March 17, 2010 11:00PM

SCOTT Porter is used to heartbreak and tragedy but he wasn't expecting it when his mobile phone rang last Friday night.

It's 8.30pm and he's at a mate's house watching Saints v Parramatta in the NRL season opener. His mobile phone rings and his dad's name appears on caller ID.

It's terrible, terrible news ... again.

Eight months after he found his mother dead inside her Cronulla home, the 25-year-old Sharks halfback learns his older sister Lisa has lapsed into a coma.

"Dad said she just passed out and fainted," Porter says of the dreaded phone call. "They were trying to resuscitate her at home.

"The ambulance came and took her to hospital. He said he'd call me back as soon as he could.

"I got another call half an hour later saying she'd passed away. It was a heart attack."

Somehow, less than 24 hours later, a shattered Porter found the incredible strength to take the field for the Sharks against premiers Melbourne.

"I guess everyone deals with this sort of thing differently," he says.

"It's very, very tough but somehow I knew my sister and my mum would both have wanted me to play. Straight away, you know what's happened, but it doesn't sort of sink in for a couple of days and then it hits you. I didn't want to let the team down. Ricky [Stuart] came around to see me on Saturday morning.

"He's been great with mum and now my sister. He came as a friend as much a coach and left the decision up to me. I really appreciated it. All the players have been really comforting. The whole club has been.

"I could have sat at home all night but playing football can help in that it takes your mind off things, even if it's only for an hour or so."

Across the game among players, officials and fans, the gutsy halfback has won respect and admiration for the courage he has shown in the face of such terrible misfortune.

On Tuesday when I picked my team-of-the-week on The Daily Telegraph website, there was one moving tribute on the blog: "You chose the wrong halfback - it should have been Scott Porter."

Storm players were equally moved.

"It was a great effort by him to show up," their skipper Cameron Smith said.

"You ask any other bloke and he would've said he wouldn't want to play. Obviously it shows how much the Sharks mean to him. We want to wish him all the best."

A funeral for Lisa, who was 38, will be held on Monday.

"The family has postponed it so I could play in New Zealand this weekend, again knowing it's what Lisa would have wanted," he said. "When things like this happen, you do lose focus. Of course you do. The past eight months ... to lose a mum and a sister have been really hard.

"Luckily I've had some wonderful support from friends and family. My dad has been great. He's also my best mate as well. He's always there for me. My girlfriend too. She's been such a rock. And the players. I couldn't get through without them."

And then there are the two beautiful little children Lisa has left behind - Scott's niece Tynesha, 6, and nephew Jack, 3.

"Aside from my dad, Lisa and her kids were my biggest fans," he says. "Jack doesn't know what's happened but the little girl does.

"They've got their jerseys with No. 7 and Porter on the back. They used to always come to our home games. Dad will still take them and look after them. It's what my sister would have wanted."

yeah covell had confirmed in an article that him and porter have been having a comp since christmas and there was no real winner so they are taking the kicks from their prefered sides, plus cov probably takes any range ones

Devastating to hear it in more detail as you get more of an idea of what he is going through. He's in my prayers.

Don't forget players are only human - Herald Sun

Don't forget players are only human
Craig Bellamy
March 19, 2010 12:00AM

THERE are often questions raised about the commitment of players in our game, mainly when off-field incidents arise.

Critics start to group all footballers together as well-paid young men who too often put themselves before their team or club.

But the efforts of Cronulla halfback Scott Porter against us last Saturday night displayed to everyone that strong commitment is alive and well in the NRL.

Eight months ago Porter's mother died, and then on the eve of last weekend's match his sister passed away unexpectedly. But Porter still played, and played well, which was a huge thing to do for the team.

Sometimes fans see these players as supermen and just expect them to roll up every week and give their best.

They don't think they have issues to deal with like everyone else.

Some people would have been surprised he played, and even I stopped to think how would I have handled that? Or what if it was one of my players? As a team you support whichever decision he makes.

But sometimes there are issues people don't know about, and the player might not come forward with it.

They see themselves as tough guys and don't want to be seen as having a weakness.

These players go through some really tough times. A few guys have showed that by the mistakes they have made off the field.

But when things happen they have no control over, sometimes there is a little bit too much expected of them to go out there and focus fully on footy.

I have seen this when I was playing, and as a coach, where players have been under pressure from personal issues and they have played, which has been good for them because it takes their mind off it for a time.

But all the emotion builds up and after giving everything in the game, they start thinking about it again and the dam bursts.

A lot of these guys are very mentally tough and have a great amount of care for their team and their teammates to go out there and play.

Scott Porter certainly did, and so did the players at the Newcastle Knights, our opponents tomorrow, who had their own well documented issues to deal with over summer.

That sort of thing might pull your club together, or at times it could tear it apart.

With the Knights it has galvanised them and you have to take your hat off to Rick Stone, Steve Burraston and Kurt Gidley for the way they have come through that.

Their result last weekend demonstrated just how important it is to have strong leaders at your club.
