I feel terrible for Ronnie but we can’t keep bending the rules whenever we feel sorry for someone. If I’m the NRL I really don’t want to set a dangerous precedent. The rules are there in black and white and should be followed to the letter with no exceptions. If they start using ‘discretionary powers’ when it comes to Origin eligibility then your opening a box of problems down the line which I wouldn’t want to deal with.

Sorry Ronnie, but if you don’t qualify, you don’t qualify. Go back and talk to Madge son.

By playing junior origins he apparently does now technically qualify, I think the issue now is more around whether to take that off him by correcting a historical mistake. Yes there are still ways he doesn't qualify, but many players would have ways that they don't qualify, just need one where they do. Through (presumably) someone else's mistake he has a way he qualifies now.

And it's not just pure rule bending that allows him to play, it's coping that in this case they made a mistake. Someone at the NRL (seemingly) created the circumstance where Ronnie is disadvantaged (especially as he turned down other offers) by approving him for Queensland previously, and ingoing as they apparently maintain a list of eligible players. If he hadn't played those previous rep games and just wanted to play origin now that would be a very different story.

Additionally via Suaalii NRL has already set precedent that they will consider exceptions of rules on a case by case basis.

I know there are rules but there also needs to be some common sense applied.
As a NSW Blues fan I wouldn’t be against Ronnie getting dispensation to play for QLD given the history.
It’s not like he has played for NZ (or in NZ) or any other state other than QLD in his older teenage years (coming over between 13 and 14 yrs old).

Just use your brains NRL/ ARL!

100% agree. It's not as if he has played for NSW and all of a sudden want to go to QLD.

They can put in additional measures to identify this issue at first junior rep call up moving forward but for now just make it happen and move on.

Would be disappointing if NSW object (not sure if they can anyway)

In the document there are two separate statements about applying for an assessment (and thus use of said "discretionary powers") if your eligibility falls in a grey area. They don't specifically cover this grey area, but lets not pretend that the document is a black and white definitive answer for every scenario ever.

I am absolutely shattered for him, he may have been denied but that won't stop his QLD passion he has. He'll be heartbroken & I don't blame him. I just hope the NRL have the same rule towards a NSW player if it happens again.

Best hope NSWRL doesn't put a player in that position. If I've managed to understand it all now, the rules weren't the problem; Ronnie being allowed by QRL to play junior SOO was

I think the issue/ confusion is a result of that 1st contract he completes and if you read through the snippet in the Fox sports story (link below) he answers ALL of the questions honestly which suggests he is entitled to continue to play for QLD.
Also remember that he had already been picked for QLD U-15’s as a 14 yr old.

The questioning in the 1st contract is very “sketchy” in the detail and appears that as long as you have already played for a state (ie QLD or NSW) at “U-15” level or higher you are entitled (Take special note of Q13).

By the time the 2nd contract comes along, the ARL have made some “adjustments” (obviously now knowing the ambiguity of the old contract) by then Ronnie has already represented QLD in U-15’s so thinks he is still entitled to play.
He completes all of the form (again, just as he did the previous time) when he should have stopped at Q-12 which now shows he is NOT eligible.

But who reads every line on a contract, especially if you think you are already eligible due to previous rep game???

I think common sense should now prevail and the decision should be to allow him to play under dispensation, given the stuff up in selecting him in the U-15 and U -18 squads.

PS, I’m a Blues Fan in case you are wondering if my opinion is based on sour grapes……

Yeah... So I think we're saying the same thing here mate. Ronnie told the truth, but shouldn't have been allowed to play junior origin in the first place
