If there is any coach out there that’s legit better then Flanagan it’s Bellamy... getting Bellamy on board is the best signing we could land in today’s game.

Well, if this was secret, and we wanted it kept that way, I hope Dino rips Riccio apart the bald flog

Yep..

“There’s a Sydney club, but I can’t name them. They’ve done a really good job to keep it secret. I’ve been talking to them for as long as the Broncos offer has been there. It’s a serious option.”

So stupid to leak it if it’s not signed and sealed

I pass out & wake up to this ... how good would that be? Sharkies quietly swooping the hottest coaching property in the league.

Cronulla Sharks and Craig Bellamy.

“We can confirm meetings have been ongoing between the Sharks, Craig Bellamy and his advisors, in relation to a potential Coaching Director
Cronulla have been in secret talks for six months to sign Craig Bellamy in a major bombshell that will shock the code.

The Sharks have blindsided both Bellamy’s current club Melbourne and leading rival the Brisbane Broncos in a stunning bid to sign the supercoach.

In a major Sunday Telegraph exclusive, it can be revealed the Sharks have tabled Bellamy a four-year deal to become the club’s director of football.

Viewed by many as the greatest coach of all-time, the plan for Bellamy would be to see out the final year of his contract as head coach of the Storm this season before linking with the Sharks to oversee their entire football structure from 2022.

The 61-year-old confirmed to The Sunday Telegraph that he had been in long-term talks with a Sydney club but refused to reveal it was the Sharks.

Asked about his future, Bellamy said: “There’s a Sydney club, but I can’t name them. They’ve done a really good job to keep it secret.

“I’ve been talking to them for as long as the Broncos offer has been there. It’s a serious option.”

Asked specifically about Cronulla: “Well, it’s a really nice place. Honestly I can’t say anything. I’ve had a bit on my plate but I’ll make a decision soon.”

Waving goodbye? Craig Bellamy says a move to Sydney is a “serious option”.
The Sharks have held-off re-signing current coach John Morris due to the delicate negotiation phase and obvious priority of trying to lure one of the biggest names in rugby league.

Cronulla are cognisant of the immediate impact Bellamy’s arrival would have on potential sponsors and recruitment targets, particularly as the club approaches the availability of almost $5 million in salary cap space to spend at the end of this season.

Rated one of the greatest NRL coaches of all time, Bellamy would be charged with overseeing the club’s entire football and recruitment structure, with the freedom to also work with the club’s corporate and commercial division — an area that few would realise the premiership-winning coach is interested in exploring.

How Cronulla have managed to become a major contender and in the fight to execute one of the game’s greatest heists is extraordinary.

Similar to their stealth-like pursuit of Dragons captain Cameron McInnes, the Sharks management, led by CEO Dino Mezzatesta and chair Steve Mace, have been working since last July to secure Bellamy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has played havoc with Bellamy’s ability to visit the Shire with the majority of dialogue being held over the phone.

Keeping any story in rugby league secret for six months, particularly one as significant as this, is unheard of.

And it’s that level of respect from the Sharks, to resist leaking their pursuit of the NRL’s greatest mentor to the press, which has undeniably played a major role in Cronulla remaining in the battle for his signature.

Given his status as one the game’s greatest coaches, Bellamy’s signature would rank as the most high-profile coaching appointment in the Sharks’ 53-year history — including that of former supercoach Jack Gibson in 1985.

Bellamy had made it clear the 2021 season would be his final year as head coach of the Storm, which led to the Broncos and Melbourne each formulating an expensive plan for him to transition into a coaching director’s role.

After appointing first-time NRL coach Kevin Walters, the Broncos are determined to lure Bellamy as a mentor back to Red Hill, where he began his coaching career as an assistant coach.

The Storm are also confident that Bellamy will remain involved at the club where he has enjoyed a deep emotional attachment and so many wonderful memories of on-field success for almost 20 years.

But after taking Melbourne to the finals in 17 of the past 18 seasons, the Sharks are hoping Bellamy is eager for a new and different career path

That's surely the selling point.

Not doing the same same at the Storm or going to another rich one team town in Brisbane but going to a small Sydney team with limited resources in a competitive Sydney market and showing that its not all about having the $$ but coaching and culture.

I’m giddy with excitement, I wonder if he is part of a package deal i.e him and maybe Ryles (as head coach) or one of his current assistance. I really hope this is further along than mere rumour, would give us instant respect amongst the media and massive sponsorship clout. Lovin so far what Dino and moody are bringing to the party.

Ricio has a pretty good relationship with the club and gets all the inside word. Not really in his nature to push things the club don’t want out there.

I’d be very surprised if this leak / story isn’t all above board with parties comfortable it’s out there. As people have said. Nothing stays quiet forever.

If it was a buzz scoop well that’s a different story as that bloke is happy to leak like his bladder.

It's exciting to be mentioned as one of the clubs he has been speaking to, but need to set expectations that he will choose somewhere else.
Couple of reasons for this,
1. financial, we obviously can't compete with Broncos on this from the football side to salary
2. location - if he is based here COVID could cause him ongoing problems to see his family in QLD with boarder closures
3. reputation - we have been the thorn in his side for a little while now, not sure how keen he would be personally to help us

Either way I'm interested to see how it all plays out

That is indeed surprising, given he’s usually one of the clubs best allies in the media. Suppose it was going to get out at some point though.

I doubt it really harms our chances though.
Anything Bellamy future related is going to be rumoured and leaked and he would know that more than anyone.

Whether we’ve got the cash to offer or the things he’s interested in for his next endeavour won’t change due to an article.

All valid points but for a true "Professional" all could be mitigated.

1. He has made more than enough coin to see out his days sipping cocktails on a sandy beach somewhere exotic so this may not necessarily be his motivation. It might be more the harder challenge he is after rather than the easy softer bank balance growth at the Bronc's. Profession people in sport and business like the "challenge".

2. The way COVID is panning out, I don't think location changes much. You can be banned from travelling "zones" within own cities and states sometimes and hopefully (fingers crossed) this thing starts fading into the history books sooner rather than later. So not sure he would reject us based on this.
Plus, no different between Moving to NSW or staying in Vic (in regards to COVID).
If this is a consideration for him, then there is no chance he doesn't take up a Brisbane gig (the Bronc's or new Brisbane team) regardless of any other offers and this decision would already be predetermined.
So your point is valid in that he might use us as a negotiating tool.
If it's a forgone conclusion anyway, then might as well get as much coin as possible from a rich club.

3. Is there a better way to further enhance your reputation than helping one of your previously biggest combatants that you have been at loggerheads with improve? If he manages to take us into the Broncos, Roosters, Storm echelon, then that further improves his reputation in regards to his skill and professionalism.

I'm very excited by these developments but would have loved the blindside story in a months times that comes from out of the blue confirming that "Bellyache to the Sharks - done and dusted".
The faces on the Broncs and storm management would be priceless and worth every dollar we pay Bellyache to join us.

Dino is certainly doing a good job for us, the McInnes signing coming out of nowhere now this potential new director coming in, we've done a good job at keeping things quiet aswell. We could certainly come one of Sydneys most disliked clubs because of this or on the other hand become very well respected. If he does come it would be interesting to see if he could convince any of his Storm players over eventually aswell.

I'm use to seeing us as one of the most disliked teams in Sydney I guess, hasn't stopped me from being a top Cronulla supporter over the years. If he does choose us it would be a pretty big story & shows our long term plans.

Also if he does end up choosing us, it shows how far we have come over a few shorts years.
There is no chance he would even consider us if we aren’t making the right noises and changes within the club.
