@Gards, understudy was probably a poor choice of words. AC or not, I still think that being around Flanno would have only helped Bombers development as a coach.

all good bro, figured thats what you were getting at and he still would have been getting some help from other coaches and assistants while coaching the 20's

Being an AC is very different to being a HC, especially at a club that has unlimited resources.

agree and Fitzty just isn't Cronulla - doesnt seem a good fit. different if he were a proven FG coach

Agree that we should either retain Morris or sign Flano those should be our only two options moving forward.

I think either all is fine and both options will have us well poised for the ‘22-23 seasons.

I do think we have a really great chance at winning another premiership in the next couple of years but I am just not sure who would be best placed to take us there....

On one hand flano is a proven premiership winning coach but that was before all these rule changes, the game has changed massively from 2016 so he’d have to adapt.

On the other hand does Morris have what it takes to motivate the team and take us through really tough and competitive finals campaigns.

Either way exciting times ahead regardless of who is the coach I think! Sit back and enjoy the ride with some popcorn.

My biggest worry with Morris was that he hadn't been able to recruit anyone. McInnes is a big win for him. If he can jag another one early, I think we should extend him and give him a shot with his own team.

This would also coincide with huge improvements in defense as well.

How was he meant to do that though with no cap space to work with?

Tolman was another good pickup under Morris and he already had alot of young talent to work with on the books and has retained alot of it with contract extensions. Few if any players seem to want to actually leave the Sharks

I really think we should have kept Soro but with them pursuing McCinnes it makes more sense now

The question is though, how much of the McInnes signing had to do with Morris and how much of that signing had to do with Flannagan?

Time for a Survey/Vote on SF. Morris or Flanno for 2022. I'm tipping JM 70/30%

And how much of it was Mooney

Unless Flanno knew he was going to be coach he can say things like it's a good club and Bomber is a good coach and reassure McInnes he'd get on with the senior players but at the end of the day that will only make up a small part of the decision.

Did Flanno claim some credit for McInnes, or was that just a journo doing jOuRnAlIsM?

From what I have seen it was suggested it could have been the case by journos (possibly first suggested by people on reddit) and then denied by either Flanno (or possibly McInnes, but one of them).
But it is still being mentioned regardless because a conspiracy is always more fun than the truth.

sounds like Flanno at least behind closed doors or in this case drapes

don't underestimate how much hook rubs some players up the wrong way. if hook were here by bet is a player or 2 would be looking for an out as well

anyways the dragons... hope they have a disaster of a season

it's hilarious they think Mary will end up here just cause McCiness apparently loved the bloke

Agreed. It’s hard to see where how Morris could have done better with recruitment and retention so far. Much bigger calls to make for 2022, but so far so good.

It’s a better side than last year and all our young players have a season under their belt.

The two things that would go against Bomber will be his win/loss ratio and perceived ability to handle the retention/recruitment that's coming for 2022. He's shown a real abtitude, and has arguably the brains behind our best past recruitment already on board, but the dollars we're talking about are pretty huge. I wouldn't blame the board for thinking an older head might be less of a risk.

Having said that, I think Bomber has got what it takes to do well through both. And hope he does.

Griffin coming in and losing McInnes but gaining McCullough should be a lesson in what can happen when you bring in a new coach.
The best bit is teams typically do worse the first year under a new coach so sacking a bloke just to bring in whoever is available is about as dumb as you can get.

I assume Bomber has a month or two to prove he’s got it under control otherwise Flanno signs for next year and presumably comes back early if we aren’t gunna make finals. I don’t especially want Flanno back but I’d be happier with that than a Ciraldo or Fitz or whoever else is floating around who isn’t a head coach yet for a reason.

I was an advocate for Bomber once he was announced as Flanno's replacement and nothing over the past 2 seasons has changed my mind yet.

He has taken a salary cap restrained side to finals both years with PLENTY of "limiting" distractions (ie long term injuries to key players and "that" indefinite suspension).

He has debuted a lot of great young talent as well as improved our fringe players games with some now becoming "must keeps".

He has a great rapport with the "future" already at the club and has recently shown he can attract some good talent to improve areas we are struggling in and not scared to make some hard calls.

I hope the board hasn't already made their decision not to extend him and give him a fair and reasonable crack (based on SJ being missing) with "his squad" before being thrown under the bus if we start very poorly and if they dont decide to extend, that they don't go with a newbie.
