I’ll never be worried about another player leaving again. If you have money you can pick up just about anyone.

Is Flanno the best recruiter in the game atm? I’d throw brown in the mix, but it only started with Ponga last year. Flanno has been picking up stars since he got the gig

edit* just saw your post in the other thread

Is it Flanno? Of course he'd have to have a lot to do with it, but is the anyone at the club who's job it is to recruit?

What's everyones opinion on the value* of Val's signature now as opposed to a month ago?

He was basically in a big bidding war between Sharks and Cowboys, but now unless another team steps in, it's just Cowboys now.

I'm sure him and his manager expected the Australian media to follow his every move like a lovesick puppy like they did with Hayne, but they don't really seem that interested.

Cronulla was expected to enter a 12 month mourning period, but we signed SJ within weeks and our season is back on track.

Val had better really wanted to try to crack the NFL, if it was a ploy from his manager to get more $$ I think they've misjudged this move.

I think he's lost a lot of his earning potential and star power he might not get back.

* Actual monetary value, not good bloke value

He would have looked good on the wing latching onto an SJ pass.

Seriously though, he was probably going to get paid overs if he stayed with us. I'm happier with SJ right now. Will have to wait until we see how next year goes before final assessment of course.

SJ to Sharks > Val to NFL.

Think they might have overestimated how many people give a **** what he's up to.

The biggest issue with trying and failing at the NFL isn't missing the cash during your time away - it's having completely changed the way your body works as an athlete.

Who knows if Val will ever be as good at rugby league again? He'll have lost a **** load of endurance and stamina, and it already took him a year and a half of playing fullback to be able to regularly inject himself in the play.

I'd like to officially thank Val for leaving. Just watched SJ's media event and the guy just oozes class. We're a better club with this guy than we'd ever be with Val, regardless of playing ability.

In your head, rent free
vals price is still the same

our perception of val is completely different to other nrl fans

imo, last year Val was head an shoulders best player in the comp, but other fans had him at 4th best fullback and not even in the top 10

a lot of fans i know think he was luck to get the origin gig over oates

he will probably still get 800k-1mil on return with the cowboys, but in tems of player stature and class of player, we have come out on top with SJ

That'll be the interesting thing to see in my mind. 97% chance he'll be back in League, and soon.

It seems to have happened to Hayne but he probably had other issues going on, plus he isn't considered the best trainer.

Valentine Holmes was set to sit out season if Sharks blocked US move

Valentine Holmes’ departure from the Sharks has been painted as relatively rosy by some, but it was anything but.

The Sharks are increasingly convinced American football has been Holmes’ plan for a while. And in that time the likes of Jesse Ramien (Newcastle) and Ricky Leutele (Toronto Wolfpack) have left the club. That has annoyed the playing group, but that may not be the main issue.

The Sharks were left with no option when it came to Holmes. A club official told me that from the moment Holmes was in the US testing himself in front of scouts, he knew he wanted to have a crack at the NFL. Holmes’ management approached the Sharks and said he was quitting. If the club had said no, Holmes was going to sit out the season. No discussion were necessary.

It took the club by surprise as they had thrown the biggest offer at Holmes that they had ever made to a player. The club was insulted and disappointed to say the least.

The Sharks approached the NRL about the issue and were basically told they could challenge it, but it would be a legal fight. The club wasn’t prepared for that.

The Sharks also gave Holmes a $100,000 payment as an incentive to sign on long-term. That gave the club confidence he could stay.

They asked for that payment to be returned pronto when Holmes announced he was leaving. It was.
The Sharks also asked that Holmes’ partner leave her job at the club, but she left on good terms. She attended the Sharks’ Christmas party.

If Cronulla appear weak for not challenging Holmes it is because they knew of his conviction to leave and didn’t want a legal battle. Instead they took the long-term approach. Holmes has to return to the club if he flops during the period covered by his previous Sharks contract. The problem for the club will be fitting him under their cap as they have signed Shaun Johnson.

They also have an undertaking that Holmes will promote the Sharks brand during his US journey. Be sure Holmes will have a lot of ground to make up with the playing group if he ever did return.

Not sure how much reliance I'd put on a Danny Weidler story but this is ****ed if true!
Val really did screw us over if he always had plans to leave at the end of this season.

Dave Smith announced a few years back that the NRL had a war chest to keep the best players in the game. If that the case then:

Val wasn't war chest worthy, or
Sharks aren't war chest worthy, or
It no longer exists, or
As most people thought, it only existed for GI, C Smith and JT

Not sure if it would have made any difference.
He was always going and he has known for a while, according to that article and that's what the ****tiest thing is.
