This may be a hard question as only a few of us on here have any direct contact with the players. But a comment was made in Gal's thread that he probably wouldn't make a good coach. I have to say I agree with that but then it got me thinking.

Who in our current squad would make a good coach?

Sometimes it's always the less flashy players that succeed as coaches as we've seen with Bellamy and Bennett. Also, do you have to have played first grade to be a successful coach?

I cannot remember too many first grade Sharks players who have been successful coaches.

Love to hear your answers guys. I'm still thinking of mine at the moment!

Lewis would probably my pick from our current squad to make a good coach, and i think if i remeber correctly when Lewis was on the market he wanted a club that would offer him a role within the club after retirement..?

But i think Cam Smith would be an absoluate great coach.

Out of the current squad I can see John Morris becoming a first grade coach. Just seeming like the type of player that will be involved in the game for a long time. Whether or not he is a successful coach could be another story.

I was thinking of Morris and i think he'd make a good strength and conditioning coach, he has certainly been around the game long enough and been around a lot of teams

Gal could be a good specialist coach as in sticking to the forwards.

Guys like lewis would make good assistants. Even robbo gives off the vibe of a future coach.

Lewis is the only player I could see going on to be a good coach

I reckon Beau Ryan would be a good coach, in a similar way to Mat Johns. Seems pretty sharp.

Only successful ones I can think of are Warren Ryan, David Waite, Brian Noble and John Monie, but all played a long time ago. Are there any others?

Unsuccessful include Bishop, Pierce and Stuart Raper.

I reckon Luke Lewis. He has more than an understanding of playing in the backs, as well as in the back of the pack. He has some real footy smarts and seems to be very well respected and admired by all off his peers. He's played under different coaches at club and at soo and Kangaroos, so he has seen numerous styles to pick from.

Chad, probably before your time mate.. but i believe David Waite (ex sharks 1st grade) and indeed a kangaroo gave a good fist of it.
As far as successful? while wiki and the wild dandelions might have some insight into his cred.
I will go on record and stick my nubile neck out while standing front and center and proclaim!
he went bloody O.K.

Interesting question and probably highlights the lack of football smarts in the team the last few years.

Of the current squad Lewis has the pedigree but I don't think he sounds overly intelligent when interviewed. Gallen speaks well and has the experience of many coaches but he has trouble working out how his own game hurts the team a lot at times.

If I had to choose I'd go with John Morris. I think Ben Ross might go ok as well.

Way before my time but wasn't Bishop the captain/coach of the 1973 Grand Final side?
