The good

The Sharks second phase play was part of the reason they went on a recent four-match winning streak and they haven’t let down in any way when it comes to slipping the ball out the back (246 offloads to be fourth in the NRL).

This has come off the back of their ability to break tackles and promote the footy. Cronulla rank fourth in the NRL for tackle breaks with 735, behind only the Cowboys, Tigers and Knights.

The potential for points is there, the Sharks simply have to do a better job at crossing the try-line.

The bad

Cronulla’s usually staunch defence has broken down significantly this season.

In years gone by the Sharks have been strong when it comes to repelling attacks on their own line, however that has not been the case this year with the Sharks ranked the fourth worst defensive side in the NRL.

Cronulla have conceded 424 points with only South Sydney, Canberra and the Titans ranking below them.

The stat is actually quite beguiling as the Sharks are middle of the pack when it comes to missed tackles (626, to be eighth in the competition).

The gun

179 metres a game makes Paul Gallen the unsurprising recipient of this award. Gallen showed everyone what he could do when he carried NSW on his back in Origin II and he is helping to get the Sharks moving forward.

The bad boy

Kade Snowden may be a representative star but stats say the big front-rower can at times be found out in the middle of the ruck.

68 misses for the season at an average of 4.5 a game can be improved upon, especially when compared to Luke Douglas’s 2.3 misses per game.

The surprise

There is no doubting Nathan Gardner is an excitement machine, but it is surprising to note he has made the most errors for the Sharks with 30 for the season.

The verdict

The Sharks need to shore up their defence before moving on to working on their attack.
