I have been lurking for a little while and writing occasionally. Started following the sharks from 1967 when I was 4. My father played lower grades for the Chooks but bought land and built a house at Grays Point and started following the Sharks when they came in to the comp. I can recall however going to the Chooks Christmas party at Luna Park every year, so he had a foot in both camps for a while. Dad died in 2008 and didn't get to see the Sharks win. I m hoping I do. I am 52 and now living in Brisbane. cheers, Paul C

Welcome Paul C.

I thought I was reading the post I am writing now when I saw your post. Then I realised I hadn't written it yet. Read on and see what I mean.

I've been a one team supporter ( Sharks) my whole life. In 1967 my dad took me and my younger brother to our first game of league. I was 9 years old and the game was the Sharks First Grade debut against the Easts Roosters at the Sydney Sports Ground. My father also played football but he was with the Footscray Bulldogs in the VFL (now Western Bulldogs in the AFL). He died in 2003 without seeing his beloved Sharkies win a Premiership also.

Like you I remember the early days and as was a schoolboy in the crowd at the 1970 England v Sydney Colts team at Endeavour Field (Tommy Bishop and Ray Corcoran in the Colts team for the Sharks). I was raised in the Shire and have lived 52 of my 57 years within the Shire. When I married I bought a unit in Maroubra area where my wife is from. After three years I talked her into moving to the Shire and we have been here ever since.

Now 47 years on from that first game I live next door to the Sharks original fullback from that 1967 game (Brian Cox) and across the road from flying 80's winger Steve Edmonds. It was a proud day when my wife, that life-long Roosters fan and daughter of a bunnies stalwart, said to me a few years ago.... "You know, when I drive across the Captain Cook Bridge and see the sign saying 'Welcome to the Sutherland Shire' I really feel like I am home now!"

"God's country" indeed.
