Smith had enough challenges making runs in his previous batting position yet alone as opener

I think selectors didn't know what to do with him anymore and were taking a punt on striking gold by shifting his place in the order maybe hoping more responsibility might spark him as well.

I mean you can't justify dropping someone as good as Smith but he has been underwhelming for a few years to me

At one point Smith (and Kohli) looked unstoppable but those days have well past

Maybe pitches aren't quite as batsman friendly as they once were either with more balance swinging back towards the bowlers (which is a good thing)

Lower totals and more wickets seems to be becoming more off a thing - T20 has no doubt had some influence even on Test cricket though.

Look, it might work. Green batting at 4 is his natural position and where he scores all his runs at state level. Smith does tend to generally do ok when he has to come in early when we’re deep in the ****. But it’s just not what I would have done, jerry rigging the order to accommodate Green I feel was unnecessary when you’ve got two natural openers who deserve an opportunity waiting patiently in Renshaw and Bancroft. Only positive for them is that Uzzie is finishing up soon as well, Smith wont be far behind.

I think hoping the extra responsibility sparking Smith was def part of that plan.

Otherwise now while Uzzie has a a little time left would make sense to get a younger player in now so they can settle a bit before Uzzie retires

Yeah, I'm guessing that they're hoping that opening will sharpen Smith's attention at the time he hits the crease.

Batting down the order, different players have different ways of dealing with the wait.

Mark Waugh used to have a nap. Dougie Walters used to get drunk and play cards.

Not saying that any approach is wrong, just some more suitable to individuals.

I saw him play at Oakes Oval Lismore, NSW vs Northern Rivers community match, before his retirement

He was carrying a schooner on his way to the field to bat and was that smashed that he bumped into opposite sides of the gates at least 3 times before he got through them and onto the field.

Then proceeded to go ballistic and smash the ball to all ends.

Was severely hungover pretty often as well for Tests, regular occurrence for him to have benders the night before.

They don't make them like Dougie anymore. Set the initial record of 44 cans on an Ashes flight to London, before Marshy broke it by one a few years later and then Boonie smashed it with a neat half-century. Those were the days. :)

Wasn't that also the era when people were getting hit with chunks of yellow ice falling from the sky after planes jettisoned their gut luggage?

Little wonder.

McKenzie showing a bit of fight but he’s getting no help, you feel if they get him out, a collapse feels inevitable.

Sad to see the extended decline of a once great cricketing team.
What's the story there - just haven't had same levels of freakish talent come through?
Under resources programs compared to other nations?
