Last night was the first time I've really watched Graham, and he actually looked to be an upgrade on Barrett if anything as far as playing ability goes.

Really exciting prospect. I couldn't believe a 19 year old half could have that much sting in defence!

That was one of is' best games for mine. Everyone talks him up but I do think he has some ways to go before he is a solid first grade 5/8th (or 7) but i am stoked we have him for next season, now we just have to find him a GOOD partner in crime.

I don't want to bag him before he plays a game for us, but I think you guys are getting carried away with his game last night. All he did was pass the ball to Lewis or Burns and put up about 10 bombs.

His defense was solid though.

Sounds like Graham wil be our Halfback according to this article, little bit from the article

"I've got my halfback [Wade Graham], I've now got my back-rower [Smith], the next thing I need is two outside backs," Flanagan said. "Even if we can't necessarily get both Colin and Brad - and to be fair dinkum I don't think we will - it would be nice to get one of them.

Yeah I read that too. It could easily be the Tele being loose with its quoting as per usual, but if its true its fascinating.

Very very interesting... it would mean Kelly's still very much in the frame.

I wish we could get a straight answer out of Flano- if someone sees him and has the guts to go up and have a chat, can you please ask him whether he sees Graham as a halfback next year?

Yeah i was thinking that about Kelly too, and Flanno sounds like a pretty straight shooter so someone should be able to get the answer out of him!

Yet to be sold on 7) Graham, but 7) Graham 6) Kelly = worth getting excited about at least. Two highly talented youngsters.

My take on Graham:

I've been keeping an eye on him when I can lately and I've been impressed enough but my opinion still hasn't really changed. I don't really know what his best position is, but atm I'd guess 5/8th. He reminds me of Scott Hill, and to an extent, Jason Smith, both because he clearly reads the game uncannily well (which is consistent with other sources- former teammates, coaches etc). Also, because the game slows down when he gets the ball. He's criticised by pennies fans for his lack of pace, but good players change the pace of the game to suit them, and he does this. Weird attribute in such a young kid, can't say I really remember it in a 19 year old before... except probably Lockyer (definitely Lockyer). No saying he'll be as good as any of those players, but he certainly has class, which we lack in our backs.

Similar size and pathway to HWMNBN (Birdy), but not the Karmichael Hunt-ish-ness or aggression.

He's a left foot kicker which is gold in the modern game, but his long kicking needs work to really capitalise on our pack's yardage work. He's got a nice, flat, accurate long pass, if slightly technically unusual one (that could just be me). Left side player predominantly at Penrith, but that's cos Lewis is a right side player there, so dunno where he's more suited. His bombs looked good the other night, and he managed to put up a bomb off his right (wrong) foot- another unusual skill (in league).

Defence is pretty good, especially considering he's only 19 (<- great song that). Seems happy to put his body on the line which is all you should ask of your little men- he's not Smith in other words.

So yeah, unusual prospect. He's slow and small for a 5/8th, and not really a dominant ballplayer who takes the footy to the line like a halfback. Could be a lock, but perhaps too small and certainly doesn't have the strength for it yet. But has a brilliant mind for the game and silky skills. Seems comfortable leading the team, talking etc. Thoughts?

I havn't watched too many games of his but watching him the other night, he showed great defence, his general kicking and passing game wasn't too bad, showed some good vision

He is a defenate positive to our side, and will be interesting to see how he goes at half, if he can direct the team around the park, i would like to see Kelly partner him

Kelly would add that spark in the middle, keep the defence guessing which is what you want from your ball players, i am quite looking forward to it...

I'm thinking maybe it could work if we basically say Graham left half, Albert right half and not worry about a 'halfback' & '5/8'. Just have them link up on big backline plays.

If he is even considering using Kelly in the halfs next season he should be giving him the end of this season to blood him.

Which is why I am a bit lost with Flano's, comment about Graham being his' half?

The only good thing to come from this is hopefully it spells the end to Smith and SFP, (which I dont mean to be nasty but I dont reckon the club can survive to many more seasons like this one and last one)

I am hoping if it is to be Graham in 7, its either Lewis or Kelly in 6.

I think you've got a better chance if you switch it and go...

6. Graham
7. Kelly

...myself.

Exactly mate! Since following league I have struggled to work out the difference between a 6 and 7, only that they play on different sides of the ground.........

I take it it was much different a decade ago?

Sounds like a certain young half we have right now would be his perfect partner.

Traditionally, and still now sometimes, the half back passes to the forwards or kicks or passes to the 5/8, who should already be running by the time he receives it. The 5/8 then drives the backs in the same way the half back drives the forwards.

This isn't really the case any more, but I personally like a half back to be 'tight' as in they stay in the ruck and have a great kick/chase game, and a 5/8 to be an elusive runner that can find holes and put people into holes.

The best example of the half back I've mentioned is Noddy on a good day. 5/8 probably more like Benji Marshall on a good day (though IMO he has some other deficiencies).

Some people just like a half back on either side of dummy half. I don't personally. I think this is made out to be more common than it is, as if it's the defacto way to play the game now. I think it's more of a fad that's losing ground.

Scott Prince is the 'purest' halfback in the game today. Lockyer's probably the 'purest' 5/8th, in that he plays right out on the fringes.

I don't really agree that the halfback drives the forwards MB- that's clearly the dummy-half's job nowadays, with those little plays around the ruck, right on the advantage line.

That's why I said traditionally mate.

Re Scott Prince, I would say that he's better than a pure half back. He crabs sideways like a 5/8 sometimes (in a good way). He's not the best example of a 'tight' half back like I was describing.

Also everything I said is within reason. Even Noddy has made a great back line line break / long range try in the last year or so at the Dogs.
