Tumut tight-lipped about its recruits

TUMUT captain-coach Clay Campbell has declared his Blues army is shaping up strongly, with the squad looking "very promising" as the 2010 season fast approaches.

Campbell is confident his squad, dominated by local players, will be bolstered by the addition of a handful of new out-of-town talents.

The star lock has revealed the Blues are negotiating with at least two new players, and while he remained coy about their identity yesterday, he said he is sure everything will be confirmed next week.

"We've talked to just a few people, but it should all be finalised in the next couple of days and we should definitely know next week," he said.

"We have one guy who has been playing in Group Nine with a couple of other clubs and one guy from New Zealand who has been playing footy up in Brisbane.

"So we'll see how he goes."

Tumut was one of three Group Nine clubs that were chasing former NRL star Bryan Norrie but Campbell has confirmed the Cronulla prop is not bound for the region.

"Bryan has signed with one of the clubs down at Wollongong," Campbell said.

"I heard his wife has a really good job with a legal firm in Sydney and it is only an hour drive from Cronulla to Wollongong.

"It s a big competition down there with the league clubs giving a fair bit of backing so I'd say he would be being fairly well looked after."

Tumut has refused to wallow in the disappointment of missing out on the storming front-rower, with Campbell dismissing suggestions it was a blow.

"We will just keep trying to make sure we have a strong forward pack for next year," he said.

Campbell admitted the Blues were looking to give their squad an injection of fresh faces, after holding back on a strong recruitment drive last year.

"We didn't go real berserk with recruiting last year," he said.

"We basically just used local players and players that had been brought to the club in the last couple of years.

"We had a good team this year but with injuries we need to add a bit more depth."

Campbell said the majority of the Blues squad from the 2009 season has stuck around and will be on the paddock next year.

"We have pretty much kept all the boys," he said.

"We have a couple that might not be around next year but we have pretty much retained the squad."

There is good news circulating in the mountains that two players will return to the Blues squad next year after successful knee reconstructions.

"Jason Back who played in the 2007 grand final and Nigel Nobel, who was injured late in 2008, both look like they will be back from knee reconstructions," he said.

"There is a couple of others that could also be back and there may even be player emerge out of retirement. It is looking very promising for next year."
