Today in the leader it says that Kearney, Hannay, Covell, Anderson and Kimmorley have done enough to make the team for round one from their trial form. Also only one centre spot and 5/8 are up for grabs so will they go with a backline like this:
1 Kearney
2 Anderson
3 Hannay
4 Pomeroy
5 Covell
6 Seymour
7 Kimmorley

This is what i am hoping for, although cov and hannay arent that quick there is plenty of pace in Kearney, Anderson (paired with Hannay on the right) and Pomeroy (paired with Covell on the left).

Yeah I totally agree that is the starting line up I would go with for round 1 even if Dykes is fit. I would rather see him coming off the bench and going to Hooker or swapping around with Seymour between Hooker and 5/8th. If he is not fit, I would want to see Kinga start at 9 and De Gois get a chance of the bench

dykes and noddy will probably get the first shot at the halves to see whether rickys attacking style has change the way they play together

with Dykes not playing a trial Seymour should get first dibs on the 6.

big mistake to play kearney at fullback in my opinion. i recall a couple of games he played their last year, and although he was not the worst fullback i have ever seen, he seemed to slow overall to make cover tackles, and was not uncomfortable under the high ball. in the parra game, wade mckinnon ran onto a pass off a forward, and blew kearney away with his pace. i'm not knocking kearney, because i think he was the best shark playing last year, but i think his speed and style of play is better suited to the halves, where his acceleration is good enough to leave some of them tired forwards grasping at thin air. if simmons is not ready however, i don't know who else to use, brown maybe?(a lot of the shire locals seem to think he is a good fullback, from what i have read.)

Well Jimmy..

Brown and Simmo are still injured, Simmo might be available for round 1 but not sure on that one.

So i would go for Kearney at the No.1 spot, but Im not Ricky so i'll leave it to him to pick that spot.

As for Dykes, as much im a fan of his, i dont want to risk him with Noddy but unless that Ricky has solved this problem then put them together.
But I was watching the 2nd trial at Gosford i noticed that when Seymour was in 5/8 he just seemed to work with Noddy pretty well.

But i guess we wont know till round 1 approaches

Well Dykes and Kimmorely are similar players this is one of the reasons they dont gel, they both want to control the majority of the attack, thats why mixing it up with one of them and Kearney last year was so successful, because they could take control and Kearney knew his role was totally supportive.

Ricky has done the right thing in coming to the club and wiping the slate clean. Everyone has an equal opportunity to impress regardless of what they were like last year, hence Noddy and Dykes getting first crack at the halves combo. Don't forget Ricky was a champion half back himself, and I've heard things from both Noddy and Dykes saying they've learned a lot about halves play already from Ricky. The one thing we can be sure of is that if Noddy and Dykes don't work, Ricky will not make the same mistake as Raper and persist with these two.

I really hope though that Ricky can get these two firing together because I think their individual styles compliment each other brilliantly and if they gelled would be the best halves combination in the league.

Well personally if all were fit I would do the below

1. Brown
2. Anderson
3. Hannay
4. Pomeroy
5. Simmons

But Simmo is still out, so Ricky has gone for Covell and Simmons. Still though a great looking backline, I just hope they all perform.

I hope Kearney does get a shot at fullback because in the trials he carved it up, and was nothing like what we remember last year.

he can come off the bench and play fullback and simmons can shift onto the wing.

I remember Anderson from his few first grade games last year, he was fair from anything special. Infact the closest he would have come to special would have been drooling in the back of a short bus. But obviously he has improved a lot (well I hope so) or we've got nothing better to fill that spot. For those who have seen trails, please give me some insight into Anderson's current form.

i'll bite the bullet, and admit that i may have been wrong about kearney not being very good at fullback. i have not seen the game, but he was the best player on the paddock, and we kept the panthers to zero. the other thing i find very interesting, from what i have heard, is every time the panthers got down to the sharks end of the field, all they could think of doing, was putting up bombs, so our back three must have de-fused the bombs fairly well to stop the panthers from scoring.

Hey Jimmy,

The reason they kept going to the bomb was that they couldn't pierce the defense it was that good, the high winds made the bombs unpredictable for both sides but the boys covered them as well as they could.

yeah, i heard that there was no way in for the panthers, even when they got repeat tackle counts 10m out from our line, great work defencively, and the radio commentators were complimenting the sharks defence constantly.
