Yeah, that tackle was what I listed as my favourite moment of his in my original post for this thread.

It was a game-winning, ball-and-all tackle he made on Manly's Danny Moore in a Monday night match on Channel 9 in 1996 at Shark Park.

He actually was a good defensive half in those days, and yes that was an excellent example - but I remember a few more just like that.

It seemed like a reasonable decission at the time. Not getting rid of Lang, but hiring Anderson. He had a great record as coach. Turned to **** unfortunately and nearly every sharks fan is still pissed about it. In his defence (if I can make one at all) that era of players probably was coming to an end anyway. But **** me he botched it.

I agree. Anderson, at the time, was a good pick up. He'd proved himself at Canterbury and then of course at Melbourne. He had that winning culture. You have to remember in 2002 he took us to within a game of the Grand Final. I think the thing that ****ed him up was the introduction of the dominant tackle rule.

With Melbourne and then the Sharks, he would run the big boppers up the middle and surrender in tackles to get the quick play the balls. This created space out wide and tries soon followed. But when the dominant tackle rule came in, defenders were allowed to hold the player down, if the ref thought it a surrender tackle (just like it is today) and the defence was able to recover better for the next play. Anderson was never the same again. Unfortunately, Presto didn't suit his style.

So, in hindsight we can all say it was a bad decision, but it would have been very hard to foresee.

By the way, just want to say that I am no Anderson fan, can't stand the bloke!

Good point about the dominant tackle rule. Forgot that came in as early as 2003.

Signing Anderson as coach definitely didn't suit Campbell's style of play, but signing Matty Johns for the 2002 season, which I'm pretty sure happened prior to Anderson signing as coach, had just as big an impact on him leaving. He was a terrible signing, as Johns only had a year, maybe two at best, left in him and was coming back from the English Super League. It turned out to be just a year for Johns, but Campbell had already signed with Penrith when Johns retired.

Would've been interesting to see if Anderson played Noddy and Campbell in the halves together, had Johns not been there in '02.

I guess my point is, if Anderson/Noddy came to the club in 2002 without Johns, then Preston would've probably still played in the halves.

I've answered this before in another thread, but this time I'll go with the 4 I wanted to be as a kid:
* Docking
* ET
* McGaw
* Speechley
* and then add my favourite ever player Peachey.

Of the current players, there's a lot who are close. Luke Lewis will go on that list when he wins the Clive Churchill medal.

All gave 100% for their club and team mates and we can add Luke Lewis to my list as a future contender

I totally agree. I was on the eastern side of the SFS that day and that is still my favourite Sharks try ever. You'll never see another one like it off a scrum anymore either.

if i think back to the first time i can remember watching a sharks game on a sunday afternoon on tv the first names that pop to mind are

1. matt rogers - absolute freakish speed and ability to score points.
2. martin lang - his hitups were the best part of any game even if we lost..
3. Preston campbell - loved watching the smallest guy on the field carving up the competition.
3. david peachey - only thing i couldnt stand about ''the peach'' was how he loved to run all the way to the dead ball line before putting the ball down when scoring a try.
4. E.T - nothing needs to be said about this bloke.

I have been following the Sharks since there first game in 1967 so to pick only 5 is near impossible...
In no paticular order my 5 favorite Sharks
Steve Kneen (One of the toughest players I have every watched)
Gavin Miller (Could off load a ball with 4 defenders on him)
Steve Rogers (A Shark Legend and still referred to as GOD)
Paul Gallen (He is an inspiration to all that play with him)
David Peachey(The best running fullback I have had the pleasure to watch)

Honourable Mention to (E.T. Tommy Bishop Greg Peirce & the Sorensens)

1. Steve Rogers - Always had the number 3 on every sharks jersey when I was a young bloke. My childhood hero.
2. Greg Pierce - Best lock we have produced. Stayed loyal, one team player,
3 ET - electrifying. Stayed loyal, one team player.
4. Peachey - should have played more rep footy and should have only been a shark.
5. Danny Lee - always there to take the hit up or make that tackle. Loyal one team player.

2. matt reick- when preston left i got a jersey and put the number 5 on my back he was so quick and had a cool name

3. greg bird- loved him to bits will played the same position so i tried to be exactly like him he has and probably always will be my favourite shark player

4. nathan gardner- **** i hope he comes back into our team he's debut season was so good and when i stopped growing and became a little guy i wanted to be like him

5. todd carney- has made our attack so much more better and makes average players look like world beaters so happy he wants to be here and a shark for life

yeah Danny Lee was a freak, it looked like he was moving in slow motion but his arms were so long that he'd haul in players when they looked like they'd already gone past, pure natural strength too - probably from eating all of those north coast herefords

Mate,loved him. I loved how he wasn't flashy but the type of front rower every team needs at least one of. He was so strong, never took a backwards step and I suppose it would be fair to say because of his strength and courage no one got over the top of him, well I don't remember anyone getting over the top of him. Dougy is of similar mould.

I used to play against his younger brothers in high school footy, the whole family are liked and well respected in the Lismore area
