Everyone keeps talking up Carney to play either half or 5/8 but I don't mind him at fullback, went pretty well for there for the roosters, and Gards didn't have the best season.????

then again carny 5/8 and gards fb feeding off each other sounds pretty good too

Where are you people getting this crap from?

Brian Smith put Carney at fullback so he wouldn't upset Anasta. The Roosters were okay but not world beaters and didn't go on their run until the shift happened. Mini is a way better fullback than Carney, Carney is a way better 5/8 than Anasta, and Anasta was handy to have on the opposite side of the field to Carney.

They got to a GF after realising where to play their players.

This exactly parallels our own team.

Graham becomes the back rower. Gardner is the genuine fullback. Carney the 5/8, and we just need to decide who plays half back (hint, a half back would be best).

We finally have NRL players available to play in their natural positions, why would anyone want to go out of their way to screw that up? They'd have to be freaking stupid to do so!

Clearly the choice is Robson, Townsend OR AK.

(Also maybe we can pick AK off the bench as impact hooker meaning no spot for Morris, which would have to be highly unlikely due to his QUALITY defense)

This means we could have 6) Carney 7) Townsend 12/13) graham (AKA the man) & 14) AK

There is a LOAD of potential in that lineup.

Other clubs did want him. They just didn't say so publicly.

I fully understand someone suggesting we play Carney out of position at 7 and Kelly at 6. Its the Jack Gibson 'pick your best 17 players and worry about positions later' theory. Could Carney do what JT did and go from a highly skilled 5/8th in to a dominating halfback? He certainly has similar talent.

Anyway, I'm leaning towards what you have there Mark, with Kelly on the bench. Doesn't matter to me who starts the season at 7 out of Townsend and Robson because Townsend will more than likely finish the year there.

What the decision comes down to is whether you value structure, organisation and consistency (Robson/Townsend) or ability, strike and flair (Kelly).

But there are a few problems I reckon:
- Where does Kelly play when he comes off the bench? Hooker? Roving? I'm not sure he's played any hooker and I doubt he could tackle in the ruck. And the last time we played him out of position...
- Assuming De Gois, Ross, Gal and Smith are automatic selections, only 4 of Bukuya, Friz, Tupou, Fifita, Gibbs, Taga and Taufua can get picked in the forwards/bench. Means someone like Taga, Bukuya or Toops will miss out- all first graders.
- Is Graham really up to tackling in the back row yet? He fell off a lot of tackles this year. And is he a better forward than the other guys- say, someone like Taga, Tupou, Friz or Bukuya- that he's forcing out?

One other thing. Of course Flano should pick the best team, but I for one would love to see Townsend become a fixture in the NRL side for a long time. Local juniors are why we have a Club at all and its important for local kids to be able to see the pathway from their backyard to GF day in a Sharks jumper. Townsend owning the #7 and winning games would be a great indication that we're doing things right and getting back to where we should be.

We must accept the baggage

Daily Telegraph Sports Editor-at-large Phil Rothfield says the Cronulla Sharks signing Todd Carney is a perfect marriage
Phil Rothfield
The Daily Telegraph
October 26, 2011 12:00AM

SIX months ago I wanted Todd Carney sent to jail.

Today I'm celebrating his arrival at the Cronulla Sharks.

Hypocrite? No way.

BLOG WITH BUZZ TODAY HERE

This is the perfect marriage with one desperate climbing into bed with another.

A club on the brink of financial ruin and a footy player who has brought new meaning to the words "last chance".

Carney needs the footy club to give his life direction as much as the footy club needs Carney to provide two points each week.

He blew .05 on his P plates, and correct, I wrote he should go behind bars, having found the paperwork from a court case in June 2007 when Canberra magistrate Maria Doogan warned the then Raiders star he would go to jail with one more traffic offence.

(The last time I checked, DUI was, in fact, a traffic offence).

Yesterday I was predictably bombarded on emails, Twitter and our website for changing tack and now applauding his move to Cronulla where I'm a season ticket holder.

With apologies to no one, here's how I see it.

I thought a short prison term - even a week or two - would do him the world of good and at least show him the flip side of his privileged lifestyle. Let him find out what it's like to be cramped into a small cell instead of earning $400,000 plus-a-year to be an NRL footy star, a lifestyle the average person can only dream about.

He eventually lost his licence but escaped a prison sentence despite the previous warning from a magistrate.

The NRL and the Roosters took no action despite a long list of prior offences. He got back on the grog and his season eventually went off the rails. Nothing illegal but certainly unprofessional behaviour.

And so he's now off to the Sharks - signed, sealed and to be delivered next week when training starts on November 3.

It's a huge risk but probably the club's most significant signing since Great Britain internationals Tommy Bishop and Cliff Watson came to the Shire in the seventies - the closest the club has ever got to premiership glory.

Will he recapture the form that saw him win the Dally M Medal and steer the Roosters to the grand final in 2010 or spend another 12 months partying?

Three weeks ago I spoke to Carney about his boozy lifestyle since being sprung with Nate Myles at Frank Paul Nu'uausala at 2am at the Courthouse Hotel while the Roosters were supposed to be on a alcohol ban.

"I'm not breaking the law by having a drink," he said. "If I sign with a club and they ask me to stop, I will."

Still, why would the Sharks take a gamble which no other club was prepared to take given the number of "last chances" he has blown?

Consider this: Reports of his likely signing has helped drive up membership sales up by 25 per cent from the same stage last year. In the betting markets the Sharks have firmed from $50 to $30 to win that elusive first premiership.

So far, so good.

The club that has been on life support for 18 months has finally secured a player who, alongside Origin skipper Paul Gallen, could deliver the first trophy to the Shire since the Amco Cup back in 1979.

A champion five-eighth who can turn ordinary players into great outside backs (ask Shaun Kenny Dowell or any of the other Roosters who benefited from his brilliance in 2010.)

The plain fact of the matter is Cronulla couldn't buy a player of Carney's ability if he didn't come with some baggage.

Will it end in tears? Will it end in a premiership fairytale?

Like Carney and his behaviour, it's impossible to predict.

Well, I was out having a coffee yesterday when a rooster insider (colleage of mine) walked up to me and, before saying hello, said 'good luck'. Straight away I asked what his thoughts were.

This fellow is in the know so what he said to me is 100% correct. 6 months ago he said to me Carney was a good kid but needed a lot more space and time to keep out of trouble. He did say the signing was a big gamble. Carney is as bad today as he has even been. He is drinking way too much and has no control over his life. His comments were 'until he goes broke he will not learn any lessons'. The issues surrounding his impact on team mates were also concerning.

I am very concerned about this signing. It could end up a stroke of genius, but could also ruin the club (we just dont have the balance sheet and sponsors to survive another 2009 meltdown). To be honest, after supporting the club for 30 years I think it might be worth the risk. I support a team to see premierships. So far it has been a long, pain staking road. Carney is an incredible talent.

.....but I am a little worried about team dynamics.

**** that if he slips up all 3 lay into him. After that the next four training sessions Todd gets 30mins of running straight at Gal, Taga and Smith (10minutes each). That should keep him in line for a while.

I think this is a risk the club had to take.Like everyone around here and the media are saying, this is a pretty significant signing for the club.

It's hard not to get excited over the fact that we now have a genuine world class half playing with us.He will make blokes like Williams,Best,Mills look like world beaters if he can get his 2010 form back.

We all know he's been in and out of trouble, but if he can get his head right, and have positive influences around him (Gallen,Smith)he can guide this club out of the depths and into a premiership contender.

We now now have the best forward in the game, and top 5 half on his day in our side,if we can only get an outside back we would be unbeatable.

Bring on 2012.

'Seriously, what has Carney done?' - Fox Sports

Cronulla great labels Sharks recruit Todd Carney as 'no more an alcoholic than the Queen Mother'
By Paul Crawley
The Daily Telegraph October 26, 2011 8:15AM

Cronulla great Gavin Miller has declared "Todd Carney is no more an alcoholic than the Queen Mother" while appealing for fans to lay off the troubled playmaker as he attempts to re-establish his career at the Sharks.

Miller is a lifelong friend of the Carney family and was instrumental in helping seal the deal with the Sharks.

"He is an outstanding player and his game is what we've been looking for," Miller said.

When asked if Carney's damaged reputation was worth the risk, Miller fired: "What about his reputation? Seriously, what has he done?"

When it was pointed out that Carney had been moved on from Canberra and the Sydney Roosters after a string of off-field indiscretions, Miller added: "The senior players of that club (the Roosters) made that decision. Todd Carney should have told them to go and jump.

"So they make a decision to not drink for one month before the end of the season, why wouldn't they have made that at the start of the season? Can you tell me why?

"I'm not defending the fact that he got done for drink driving, I'm not defending that at all because I know what effect drink driving has on families, I know only too well.

"But at seven o'clock the next day, I think we all at some stage of our lives have mistakenly run the gauntlet. Again, I'm not defending his actions but that situation could have happened to anyone."

Miller said he does fear Carney's past will make it hard for him to move forward unless his medical condition is re-evaluated.

Carney's solicitor Stephen Alexander told a court in April that the troubled star was attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings after he narrowly avoided a jail sentence for low-range drink driving.

Carney told the court at the time: "The hardest thing for me was to admit I had a drinking problem and that it is something that has brought me before the court many a time. But I feel like I'm turning the corner on a daily basis."

But Miller said: "The problem Todd is going to face for the rest of his career is he is going to be scrutinised. I've known Todd and his family all his life. He needs to be re-assessed because Todd Carney is no more an alcoholic than the Queen Mother - I'm serious.

"And I think he needs to get a proper assessment to clear the air, to clear this stigma that is hanging over his head about him being an alcoholic.

"Because every time he goes into a licensed premises, someone gets their phone out to take his photo. He might be drinking a light beer and people can't help themselves, these current players face enormous scrutiny. It's enormous.

I've spoken to Todd about joining Cronulla ... and to be honest with you, I'm as pleased as punch because he is the type of player who can make Cronulla very, very competitive."

These are all very good points. Before Carney I was set with Townsend/Kelly and Graham in the second row. Part of the reasoning for this was that I believed having three halves on the field at the one time is something we needed to do to liven up our attack and keep the opposition guessing. I figured it would put less pressure on each one and would stop Gallen and our props trying to be play makers. You could divide the field into segments and make each half responsible for their own segment with Townsend being first receiver most of the time, but other times it going straight to Kelly or Graham.

With the addition of a genuine half like Carney, you're right, we don't need to really have an extra half on the field. That sort of sucks because it makes me think Graham doesn't fit anywhere in the team! But I guess it also means I reckon he needs to play in the forwards and learn the trade there, as it's his only possible spot and he's a really good player. He doesn't have to play 80 minutes. I reckon he's already tough enough.

Regarding Kelly coming off the bench, yeah he would have to play some hooker. Yeah I don't know if he's any good at that. I just wanted him in the team. Again Carney has made Kelly not quite fit in, and that sucks!

Four of Bukuya, Friz, Tupou, Fifita, Gibbs, Taga and Taufua. That's not that hard for me.

Friz - I didn't see much in him in first grade and he went quiet afterwards in NYC with there being quite a few forwards in better form than him in the NYC team including Peachey. I think he needs to earn his spot the hard way now, through NSW Cup form. I think the hype of last year got him his debut and he didn't run with it. We can't just roll out the red carpet for him in a team like ours when you have guys like Bukuya that are better players and have worked hard through injury to genuinely deserve their spot.

Bukuya - I would like to trial him at centre. I genuinely think he'd do a good job there.

Tupou - He's sort of an auto selection anyway due to his price.

Fifita / Gibbs / Taga - They can make the team.

Taufua - Depth. Replaces Tautai. Will be very handy during origin / tests / when others are injured. He'll get plenty of games.
