INURED TRIO IN DOUBT FOR SOUTHS MATCH
Three players injured in the Sharks loss to the Gold Coast Titans are in doubt for Saturday night’s match with the undefeated South Sydney side.
Adam Dykes, Ben Pomeroy and Lance Thompson have all but been ruled out, with coach Ricky Stuart and Sharks physio Matt Green to make decisions on their fitness later in the week. Dykes is struggling with a foot problem, Pomeroy with a badly bruised hip and Thompson with a knee injury.
None of the injuries are long term or serious, but their absence, especially that of Dykes and Thompson, could leave the Sharks a little short on experience for the Souths clash.
“If those guys don’t play it will give someone else the chance to show what they can do in first grade,” Stuart said. “It will be a big challenge but this team will turn up every week and have a crack.”
At this stage likely replacements have not been named, with Stuart yet to assess the form of those players who went around in Premier League last week.
A decision on Paul Gallen will also be left until closer to the game, however early indications are that he might be one more week away in relation to getting back onto the paddock.
Stuart does have David Simmons ready to re-enter the fold, with the likely scenario should Dykes be unable to play seeing Brett Kearney switching to five eighth and Simmons taking over in the fullback role.
Phil Leuluai, who impressed Stuart with his size and strength during the pre season trials, has overcome an ankle injury and will also be available should he be needed. Leuluai got through 60 minutes of game time in the Premier League last week and pleased the Sharks coaching staff with his first-up performance.
The Sharks v Souths clash, a match featuring the return to Toyota Park of Nigel Vagana and David Peachey in opposition colours, kicks off at 7.30pm.
The big game is part of a ‘super Saturday’ of rugby league, with the afternoon beginning with the under-16 Matthews Cup Sharks playing Illawarra at 12.30pm. In all five matches will be played, with the Matthews Cup, SG Ball, Jersey Flegg and Premier League Sharks all in action at Toyota Park on Saturday.
