Kendall released by Kings
November 25, 2010, 12:17 PM AEST
By: Sydney Kings

Luke Kendall has been released from the Sydney Kings.

Kendall's try out with the reformed and iconic Sydney-based team, the Sydney Kings, came to an end today as the club reviewed its roster.

Over the past two weeks, the Sydney Kings has been assessing four players for their on-court fit with the existing playing roster, as well as covering injuries and fitness levels of Ben Knight, Luke Martin, and Luke Cooper.

Luke Cooper, the Sydney Kings dynamite Point Guard, recently underwent surgery on his left foot, as a result of a season ending injury incurred while playing against the Adelaide 36ers.

"Luke Kendall and Joel Wagner have been playing and training well since they started with the team. However, the time arrived for us to make a decision on who we could keep," Head Coach, Ian Robilliard said.

"This ties in with our consideration of our new prospective imports – Patrick Sanders and Gordon Watt, one of whom will be selected to play for the Sydney Kings for the remainder of the season," he added.

"We knew when we lost Martin and Cooper, our two Point Guards, that the team structure would need to be revisited. After playing six games, and battling the frustrations of injuries, we have made the adjustments we needed to make and have a team to excite the fans and offer the Sydney Kings a great foundation.

"I am very confident we have now made the changes we needed to make and that, as a result of these hard decisions, we have a very solid foundation and that the results on the court will follow."

"Joel Wagner has proven himself to be a tough-as-nails player, and has adapted well to his new team. He was inspirational against Townsville and deserves a shot in the NBL. Wagner will bring a lot of enthusiasm to his role as Point Guard for the team," Robilliard said.

Sydney Kings’ General Manager, Bob Turner, said that it is the nature of professional sport that hard decisions need to be made in the best interests of the team and the fans.

"The Sydney fans have high expectations of their sporting teams, and the Sydney Kings is no exception. We need to fuel the fans desire for fast, aggressive, entertaining basketball, and we are confident that the adjustments we have made to our domestic and import roster will achieve this goal," Turner said.

The Sydney Kings play the Wollongong Hawks at the The Sandpit on Friday November 26, followed by their next home game at the Sydney Entertainment Centre against the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday December 5 – tip off at 6pm.

Patrick 'The Colonel' Sanders Takes the Kings' Crown
November 25, 2010, 02:22 PM AEST
By: Sydney Kings - Mark Wells

After two days of intensive trials with the Sydney Kings, head Coach, Ian 'Moose' Robilliard announced today that Patrick Sanders would join the Sydney Kings as the team's new Small Forward.

The 25 year old from California, USA, will join the Sydney Kings and play his first game with the team as soon as immigration formalities have been completed – most likely for the Kings' next home game on Sunday December 5, at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Ian Robilliard said that while both Gordon Watts and Patrick Sanders trialled well with the team, the coaching staff determined that Sanders was the best fit for the Sydney Kings.

"We brought two quality basketball players to trial with the Sydney Kings. They both brought their particular skill sets. The coaching team needed to see which player would best suit our particular style of basketball, who would bring something new to the team, and who brought the most intensity to the team," Robilliard said.

"One of the aims of the trials was to find the missing piece of the puzzle. It was a tough process, and both Gordon and Patrick brought particular talents to the team," he added.

"I am really excited about Patrick, and I am confident the fans are going to be out of their seats when they see what he can do with the ball from just about anywhere on the court.

Speaking about winning a place as the newest Sydney King, Patrick said that he is very, very excited about joining the team.

"I have heard great things about the Sydney Kings and the organisation behind the team. I am really looking forward to helping the Sydney Kings get a couple of wins, that is for sure," Patrick said.

"I think I bring energy and athleticism to the team and, because I have played in the USA and Europe, I hope my experience will add to the team too," he added.

"I know that I have been brought into the team to score points and my track record proves that I can do just that.

"Being able to use what I do to get to the line and put on as many three-pointers as I can in the game fires me up too.

"Right now, I just want to get on the floor and make the court my home. I don’t get too emotional aggressive when I pick my spots and in defence, like a game where it is physical at both ends and it feels so much better when you know you have worked hard to get the victory. It just makes the win so much sweeter.

"My college room mate, Nick Campbell, is from Tasmania. He told me the people were great and he is so right. I have had a great time in Sydney, even though I have only been here for just two days. I think I am going to really enjoy myself with the Sydney Kings and seeing Australia when we hit the road," Patrick said.

Despite finishing as the sixteenth-ranked scorer in school history, Sanders was not drafted out of college. He would later sign with the local NBA D-League franchise, the Los Angeles Fenders however; he was traded to Iowa during training camp for D-League All-Star Dwayne Mitchell.

In his rookie season with the Iowa Energy, Sanders played in 41 games and was a starter in 36 of those games. He averaged 13.9pts, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists, while shooting .417 percent from the 3-point line, in 30.7 minutes of playing time per game.

On January 22, 2009, he broke the Iowa Energy franchise scoring record by tallying 43pts and five rebounds in a double overtime victory against the Dakota Wizards. On February 16, 2009, he had a perfect shooting performance against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants inking 11-11 from the field for 29pts, five rebounds and five assists.

After one season in D-League Sanders moved overseas and signed with Eclipse Jet in Amsterdam for the 2009-10 season. On July 30, 2010, Sanders signed with Latvian club VEF Riga.

Sydney Kings General Manager, Bob Turner, said that the Sydney fans have high expectations of their sporting teams and that Patrick had the ability to entertain and score points.

"We need to fuel the fans desire for fast, aggressive, entertaining basketball, and we are confident that the adjustments we have made to our domestic and import roster will achieve this goal," Turner said.

The Sydney Kings play the Wollongong Hawks at the Sandpit on Friday November 26, followed by their next home game at the Sydney Entertainment Centre against the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday December 5 – tip off at 6pm.

Kings release Taj McCullough
December 06, 2010, 12:19 PM AEST

By: Sydney Kings - Mark Wells

Taj McCullough has been released by the Sydney Kings. He is the second import to be released as the team build a roster to meet the expectations of the Sydney Market.

Head Coach of the Sydney Kings, Ian 'Moose' Robilliard, said that the team had persevered with McCullough, hoping that he would lift his game and make a stronger contribution to the team. He said that McCullough had been given considerable leeway and a number of opportunities to improve his game, none of which had been realised to date.

"The axe fell for Taj in the game against the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday night. It was always going to be a tough game and we really needed everyone on the team to play with passion, pride, and as a team," Robilliard said.

"In fairness to Taj, he himself acknowledged that he had not provided the necessary contribution to the team that everyone had expected," he added.

"The Sydney fans have lost faith in Taj, and with that hanging over his head and Patrick Sanders having such a standout game after just one week of training, I have to say the tough decision was a little easier to make," he added.

Robilliard said that the Sydney fans deserve to watch a team that fights for every possession, refuse to take a backward step, and is making an effort.

"That is the commitment I make to the fans and the team, and I want and expect the same commitment in return.

"We will reduce the minutes of players not putting in 110 percent, they are all aware that they need to lift their game, play as a team, have a hell of a lot more pride in the singlet.

"We have talked about accountability and, as a team, we have to be accountable to each other for our performance on and off the court. Case in point, Julian Khazzouh played well again. Ben Madgen, Ben Knight, and again Patrick Sanders stood up for team. It was great to see Ben Knight out on the court with so much focus; an aspect so essential to our game when building a team from scratch.

"We will renew our search for a replacement import immediately, we know what we need and we will be quite specific in finding the right player, with the right skill-set to make the Sydney Kings a competitive force for the rest of the NBL season.”

The Sydney Kings play archrivals the Wollongong Hawks at home at the Kingdome on Sunday December 12, 2010. Tip-off is at 6pm. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.

Sydney Kings sign former Memphis Grizzlies player Trey Gilder
December 07, 2010, 02:15 PM AEST
By: Sydney Kings - Mark Wells

The Sydney Kings have acted quickly to replace import Taj McCullough by signing former NBA player and free-agent, Trey Gilder.

Head Coach, Ian 'Moose' Robilliard, announced the signing of the Texas-born Forward to the Sydney Kings roster today; adding that Gilder will arrive on Wednesday December 8, 2010.

"We are confident that Trey Gilder will fill the gap in our roster. He is a fit, aggressive player who is ready to play and who will suit up against the Wollongong Hawks at the Kingdome on Sunday," Robilliard said.

"He is 206 cm (6’9”), 106 kilograms, which meets our needs for a player combining size, speed, athleticism, skill, defensive intensity and versatility," he added.

A former NBDL All Star and current NBA player, the 25 year old was most recently a starter for the Atlanta Hawks for every single NBA Summer league game. Beforehand, he was part of the Memphis Grizzlies’ undefeated 2009 Vegas Summer League roster, posting 5.4 points and 2.8 rebounds on 63.2 percent shooting in 12.8 minutes in just five games.

Although Gilder was not selected in the 2008 NBA Draft, he was named as part of the 2007-08 All-Southland Conference First Team, after leading the Northwestern State University Demons in points (16.4) and rebounds (6.2). He finished ninth in his college history in points for a single season, posting 542 points.

Other statistics for Gilder include being selected as a key reserve for the 2009 NBA D-League Champion Colorado 14ers. As a rookie, he averaged 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in 23.9 minutes in 50 games (11 starts), as the team posted the D-League’s best regular season record (34-16) and captured the franchise’s first D-League title. Gilder, who was originally selected by the 14ers in the second round (31st overall) of the 2008 NBA D-League Draft, averaged 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 14.8 minutes per game in all four of the team’s postseason contests.

"We promised action and we have delivered. We have secure the services of a quality player, who will join our other import Patrick Sanders and the rest of the Sydney kings roster to get our 2010 – 2011 campaign back on track," Robilliard said.

"If the NBL competition is made up of thee parts, we have used the first part of the 2010-2011 season in making adjustments to the roster, establishing our culture, and building trust and commitment within the team. Gilder and Sanders bring more depth and experience to the Sydney Kings, this pairing of imports will be extremely exciting to watch.

"Our current priority is to build a team based on team values, this includes the obvious need to put points on the board, win enough games to get the Sydney Kings up the NBL Ladder, and back into contention as the team that is hard to beat."

Kings' import loses 13kg on flight
Mike Hurst From: The Daily Telegraph December 09, 2010 12:00AM

THE Kings' latest import Trey Gilder was famished after his 20-hour flight from Dallas to Sydney yesterday. He hurried to the restaurant at the team's training base at Macquarie University - perhaps hoping to gain the 13kg he apparently lost somewhere over the Pacific Ocean.

It is a perennial peculiarity that new players to the NBL invariably suffer some form of trans-Pacific shrinkage.

Usually it is a loss of height. But in 206cm Gilder's case it is bodyweight.

The Kings promoted him as being 105kg, but the 25-year-old American forward said he was actually 205 pounds, which converts to a somewhat underweight 92.5kg.

All right, so he may not dominate in the paint but that's not his game and one thing the Kings understated was the fact that Gilder has played two games in the NBA this year for the Memphis Grizzlies.

"I was there with the Grizzlies for a few months and then played two games in the NBA before they sent me to the D-League [the development league] where I played in the All-Star game. You get voted for by the fans just like they do for the NBA All-Star game," Gilder told The Daily Telegraph yesterday. He also played for the Atlanta Hawks in the Summer League.

Kings fans will get the chance to make up their own minds whether Gilder is their new moneyman this Sunday at Sydney Entertainment Centre when the Kings tip off at 6pm against last season's losing NBL grand finalists, the Wollongong Hawks.

"I was a late bloomer, so hopefully I keep getting better. That's what I strive for," Gilder said. "I'll do whatever it takes to win, hopefully get to the NBL playoffs. I don't like losing.

"I've come here to get more experience, more court time, develop my offensive game a little more, get stronger and continue to lift [weights] - and get back to the NBA and play at the highest level I can."

Two-time New Zealand Olympian point guard Mark Dickel also flew in yesterday from Las Vegas and it is a good bet he will see court time with the Kings soon if not already this Sunday.

"Mark would provide a hardness, an edge in the backcourt," Kings head coach Ian Robilliard said yesterday.

A veteran court co-ordinator of more than 100 games for New Zealand, 188cm Dickel, 33, said he had not played a game since May 22, but he looked in shape yesterday.

Calling the Big O to resurrect Kings
Mike Hurst From: The Daily Telegraph
December 09, 2010 12:00AM

SOMETHING is amiss at the court of the Kings. So far this season Sydney are yet to win at home. That ring of confidence isn't there.

Maybe it really is just the vibe of it but if the Entertainment Centre is ever to reclaim the mystique of being the Kings' Castle, then a fortress mentality is needed - within the player ranks and certainly in the stands.

Rodney Overby - "The Big O" - thinks he can bring back to the Kings that fusion of hip-ness and hoopla, a straight-shooting toughness and flair for which the late founding owner Mike Wrublewski hired him as courtside announcer during the Kings' halcyon years from 1988 to 2004-05.

Do you want to bring back Rodney O? Watch our video above and then vote in our poll to the left.

More than the "voice of the Kings", Overby brought street cred to his commentary and passion - sometimes even guidance - to the team.

When Brian Goorjian led the Kings to the title, he insisted Overby stick by the Kings and gave him a coveted NBL championship gold ring for his contribution in helping set the winning tone.

Now the Kings are considering bringing Overby back as their home games announcer.

"I know the Kings need me and I need them. When Mike [Wrublewski] was around he knew I brought that atmosphere - I was a court conductor, not a cheerleader," Overby said. "All this candy arse being nice [to the other teams], to hell with that: This is a war and I am a warrior with words.

"And I love the Sydney fans to death. Like Mike said: 'When we win I want the fans to be ecstatic. When we lose, we hurt together'.

"The Entertainment Centre is not the Kingdome yet, not our home yet until we all become united. The home crowd should be worth 10 points to the Kings. When Bob Turner was coaching the side, he knew this."

Kings stretch losing streak
Amanda Lulham From: The Daily Telegraph
December 12, 2010 10:22PM

THE Sydney Kings' revolving door may require a grease and oil change after the former champions last night established a new record for the most losses on the trot in their history.

While the club sank to a fresh low a new Kings star sparkled as Patrick "The Colonel" Sanders kept the Sydney crowd loud with his heroics at both ends of the court in their match-up with the Wollongong Hawks.

But while one import shone, the newest of the new men Trey Gilder was slow to show his goods in his first outing for a side with a mortgage on the bottom rung of the NBL ladder.

As the Kings recorded their eighth successive loss, the 15-point Hawks victory was Wollongong's first win at the Kingdome since 2005 and secured them top-of-the-table position after nine rounds of the competition.

"This week showed the importance of our bench and our depth," Hawks coach Gordie McLeod said after his side racked up 34 points off the bench to the Kings' 18.

"They [the Kings] have probably kept most teams to their lowest scores all year. For us to come and play the way we did is very pleasing."

The Kings have not won a game since their first away outing of the competition against the Melbourne Tigers in October.

Last night's defeat was their second loss to the Hawks this year and established a new club mark for consecutive home losses - their sixth at home, dating back to the 2008 grand final.

Coach Ian Robilliard has repeatedly said he would continue to change his roster until he finds a winning combination. With Sanders, at least, it appears the coach has found his money man with the American scoring 24 points, which included 20 in the first half. Sanders also pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists.

"I singled him out at half- time. He kept us in the game," Robilliard said of Sanders. "But he needs a stronger support act."

The night started badly for former Memphis Grizzly Trey Gilder, whose name was spelt wrongly on the stat sheet as Glider. He wore the retired number of Shane Heal on his shirt and it took him until the second quarter to make his first smudge on the boards.

"Two trainings, it's not easy, there is high expectation. He will grow with us," Robilliard said.

"You can see he can move. He will complement our offensive structures."

The Hawks hit a competition season-best 15 three-pointers, with veteran guard Mat Campbell leading the barrage and emerging from a slump with 18 points.

The Kings now hit the road for some tough travelling, playing Adelaide on Friday night and Perth on Sunday in a Doomsday Double.

Wollongong 95 (T Coenraad 24, G Ervin 19, M Campbell 18) Sydney 80 (P Sanders 27, J Khazzouh 12, B Madgen 11, T Gilder 11) at Sydney Entertainment Centre.

Kings take a nostalgia trip but Hawks deny them a return to glory days

Daniel Lewis
December 13, 2010

THE Sydney Kings have succumbed to fan pressure and brought back Rodney O, their legendary match-day spruiker, but rediscovering the mojo that made them champions in 2003, 2004 and 2005 is proving much harder.

In their round-nine match against the Wollongong Hawks at the Entertainment Centre last night, the Kings lost 95-80. It was their eighth straight loss and left them rooted to the bottom of the table.

Rodney O lead the chants of ''D-fence'' but the Kings did not respond against the rampant Hawks.

Advertisement: Story continues below
Just over a third of the way into their first season, it has all gone sour for the Kings since they won their opening game 84-68 against the Melbourne Tigers in Melbourne on October 15.

Another loss had always looked on the cards given that the Hawks went into the game on top of the nine-team NBL ladder with eight wins from 10 games. And in their one previous meeting this season, in round seven on November 26, the Hawks handed the Kings an 89-72 spanking.

After the previous round's heavy loss to the New Zealand Breakers, the Kings sacked their second import of the season, Taj McCullough, last Monday, and replaced him with another American, Trey Gilder. The tall, slender forward was only unveiled on Thursday and spruiked as an accurate shot.

The first points of the night were scored by the Kings' other replacement import, Patrick Sanders, who hit a lovely three-pointer and went on to top score for the Kings with 27 points.

Just over two minutes into the first quarter, Gilder took his first shot, missed, and was benched with four minutes and 30 seconds of the quarter remaining without scoring from two attempts.

When Sydney called a second time-out with just under two minutes to play, they led 20-19, but the Hawks nosed back in front to lead 23-22 at quarter-time.

Gilder, wearing No.23, re-emerged for the second 10-minute quarter, and finally got his name on the scoresheet.

His first two-point basket came after a nice drive to the ring, and a minute later he had his first three-pointer as he started to look like he was getting into the rhythm of the game.

His final result for the night, after nearly 22 minutes of court time, was four two-pointers from eight attempts and one three-pointer from four attempts for a total of 11 points.

The scoreline was Hawks 50-39 at half-time and 74-58 at three-quarter time.

The Kings never gave up but never looked like beating the Hawks.

Kings general manager Bob Turner wants average home crowds of at least 5000. Last night's match - the closest thing to a local derby in the new NBL - attracted 3685.

Allen Iverson To The Kings...

ALLEN Iverson has announced to his fans he intends to finish his illustrious basketball career playing in Sydney, presumably for the Kings.

It's all news to the only Sydney franchise in the NBL, but "AI" - also known as "The Answer" - responded to rumours that he wants out from his contract playing in the Turkish league.

He wrote on Twitter: "I am very happy here in Istanbul, but if I don't return to the NBA I am considering a move to Australia after my two-year contract is up.

"I hear Sydney is a real good city to live in. my boy Rodney O asked me to come over. I am comin!"

Iverson, 35, is an 11-time NBA All-Star who topped the season scoring in the NBA four times. His 26.7 points per game ranks sixth all-time, and his playoff career scoring average of 29.7 points, second only to Michael Jordan.

Sydney Kings CEO Bob Turner quipped: "Tell you what, it would stop everybody talking about our need for a point guard, even though he's actually a shooting guard.

"But our salary cap might take a battering."

Rodney Overby, the voice of the Kings, like AI, is from Philadelphia.

"I would love for AI to come to the land Down Under and I would love for him to come to the Sydney Kings because we do need a point guard," Overby told The Daily Telegraph. "AI was one of the premier guards in the world. He would bring an unprecedented swagger to the NBL."
