On the Bennett talk missing out in Kiwis coach.. Wasn’t there a rumour in here we were interested in him as a coach coordinator or what ever role they call it these days??

Could that open the door for that happening now. I would be keen on that idea, Bennett is a very smart man and his presence, once a week or whatever it may be could really help Fitz as a coach on some minor details
Yeah as a coaching director. There was a rumour in the last few days about the Eels being interested in Bennett as a coaching director as well though Parra came out and said that was bullshit.

Yeah man there was a few things going around about that couple of weeks back. Not much has been said since so think that one was a bullshit rumour.

Wow, from 2025 there are quite a few players off contract. Finucane, Hazelton, Hunt, Kaufusi, Kennedy, McIness, Mulitalo, Nikora, Trindall & Wilton. So many important players from the end of 2025, I hope we can re-sign at least 7-8 of those players.

Yeah that's a scary list.

Finucane gone. Hunt may be squeezed out if we resign Jack this year.

Nikora is a vital one. Cam would be a great keep too on a club friendly contract.

The hard thing with many of these guys is that they shouldn't be irreplaceable, but the market is just so bare.

I just wonder how many we can re-sign, I'd rather re-sign at least 7/8 of those players rather then sign new players from different clubs.
That’s the system we’ve been using and if we win a final this year it’s the system we’ll keep using.

If we don’t… might start to see more of these guys being replaced than retained

Not to mention there's going to be some decent coin thrown around to try and entice some of them to leave. Hopefully BHU has set the standard.

Dragons are paying Luciano less than 700k a year on average with what cows are chipping in for him.

"Under NRL rules, a percentage of Reynolds’ salary in his final year would not count towards the club’s cap".

I'd never heard of this. Anyone know more?
The simple answer would be Veteran allowance but that’s all I can think of

Yep veteran allowance.

It used to be that anyone with 13+ years of NRL experience was eligible. Reynold's current contract was signed under the old CBA so wouldn't have been eligible in 2022 (his 11th year).

They changed this to 10+ years of NRL for the 2023 season, so it's possible (likely) that they are using this for 2023 and 2024 already and the journo is only aware of the 13 year rule.

It is also possible that the 13 year rule (10% from va) is still in place in addition to the 10 year rule (5% from va) but I haven't seen anything on that.

Couple of ex Sharks pathways players have popped up in Q Cup with the Sunny Coast. Kyle Paterson and Kai Parker.

Kyle Paterson had a couple of years off and is coming back. Kai Parker was Flegg in 2022 and played for the Jets last year.

Yeah that makes sense. Thought there was some insinuation in there about the coaching being a factor, but it might just have been due to them mentioning the discount without context.

Definitely can’t defer payments into post-playing coaching gigs. That’s textbook circumvention and wouldn’t be allowed. You can have a handshake but that’s all. Any money that is promised has to be included in that year’s cap.

Paterson was the hooker from Canberra originally if not mistaken?

It's also a bit misleading when the veteran/developed player allowance gets reported as an exemption. That allowance is really just a $300k bump in your total salary cap number as long as you can competently manage your salary cap. There are no teams sitting around in April saying "geez I wish we could use some of that free $300k to sign this bloke".

E.g. Sharks have only Cam and Dale eligible as veterans, but 10+ who would count as developed players. They would use up the $300k easily.

If you believe the reporte numbers for Cam and Dale + the ratchet… just their two contracts wild take up ~$80-90k of it.

I'd re-sign McIness, Mulitalo, Nikora

Maybe to Hazelton, Kennedy, Wilton

Trindall, Kaufusi, Hunt need to show something special this year

Finucane ok to leave
