From the Gun,

Re: AFB and the Warriors. Their stance for right now, is he will be a Warrior for 2024.
Brilliant news for us as we have roughly around 700k and 3 spots to fill.
We have enough money in 2025 for a proper run at him anyway.
If the Warriors change their mind between now and whenever, and allow him to leave in 2024, we have more money than Wests, St George and the dogs to have a run at him for the season.

With that information in mind, I expect us to sign 2 more players of the Billy Burns ilk, and leave money available for if/when AFB becomes available, or another star gets disgruntled.
I have also been told that should we decide we want to target AFB, we will try and secure him quickly for 2025 and then begin negotiations with NZ.

The usual tripe about offloading players that you see on the socials won't happen.
Hunt & Kaufusi have no desire to go and BHU will extend or move to another Sydney club.

We also had some initial interest in Jarome Luai, but that cooled when his manager started asking for a Million dollars and the number 7 jersey

The Roosters. Don’t forget the Roosters!

They always seem to find enough coin to pick up rep players who want to join them for the “culture”

For him to midseason transfer you'd think they'd have to be really struggling and us at least in decent position

I’m not sure how you can secure him and then negotiate his release to you afterwards.

You can certainly get him keen but that is not securing him.

Is there a different approach I’m missing?
Or is secure just being used quite generously?

Secure him for 2025, try and get him released for 2024.

They (say they) won't release him for 2025 without a player in return though, so it's still very reliant on negotiating with Warriors. Obviously if you can sort something with them for 2025 that is a good start and will make it a bit easier to get him early.

Ah OK. I thought he was off contract for 2025.

Lot's of players unsigned for 2025 though. They may in the background agree to let him go for 2025, and sign a player completely unrelated to the club he's going to. JDB, Max King, BHU and Crichton are all off-contract then. They may even decide to throw that money at Dearden, Mam or Luai.
I think the 2025 is just giving them more time to plan for his departure and balance the squad.

Yep, they can always just spend the bulk of the money themselves and only seek something minor in return.
We should pull a Gus Gould and talk up a random junior so they think he is a good trade (like one Dogs fan suggested re Gabrael).

Even BHU who seems like a potential fit (Gun disagrees) we may not sign him to trade but perhaps could help him use his availability and AFB leaving as leverage to get a good contract from Warriors for him. We encourage him their way but also encourage them to sign him and his manager will know there is big bucks to be had.

Hard to see most of the players you named choosing Warriors but if they wave enough of that million, or add to it, then always a chance.

If SJ holds up well through this season partnering with Dearden/Mam/Luai could be a real threat. Metcalf potentially can do half as much for 20% the price though so I think forwards might need to stay their main spending focus.

Dogs met with Luai today. I have no ****ing clue how they are in the market for players still after what they’ve spent so far.

Kaufusi is not a player we need and should be moved on. If he doesn’t want to go stiff ****, make him want to go. He should be the first player we offer as part of a deal for AFB. Throw in a signed Matt Moylan jersey also to add some cream to the deal.
