If he stays at his happy place and continues to have success then I'd expect that private sponsorship would have the potential to dwarf his salary anyway.
Maybe 3rd party sponsorship is what could be holding up the contract, trying to reduce the impact his salary will have on our cap

Tigers looking at George Williams for 2024. They need to **** off Brooks and multiple other player on their roster who simply aren’t performing.

Signing Williams would be a start but they also need a fullback and outside backs. Long road ahead for that club.

I'm fine paying him $1m but if he's cool with $850k I'm not slipping another $150k in just because the Eels paid Moses X amount.

I still think $1m is a bargain considering what he brings to the team and the franchise. I think the way our club is structured we can afford it as well. Normally I would agree with the sentiment that we try get players as cheap as we can, but for Nicho I'd be happy to pay his worth, regardless of whether he may take less.

I'm a manager at my work, and there are some people I give pay increases to even though I know they are no chance of leaving. I do it to show them they are valued and that they deserve it.

I'm not saying we try swindle him on unders. But if terms are agreed upon between both parties after everyones done their due diligence then thats what we settle on. **** what other clubs pay other ****s. If he wanted to go to market I'd encourage fighting for him hard. Cap management is probably more crucial in NRL than wherever you work.

I'd pay the prick Ponga money & hope, but if he gets how much harder it'll make his job & relinquishes a bit to have a good side around him & get success I'm leaning all the way into that sorta mentality.

Wighton has 7 clubs interested in him so far.

Knights, Titans, Dragons, Raiders, Tigers, Dolphins and Cronulla have all reached out to his manager for early discussions.

Source? I highly doubt we'd be interested.

That's not a group of teams I ever want to be mentioned alongside...

I read another article saying 10 clubs with Parra one of the most interested. All sounds like garbage.
They are chasing an impact 14 who can play FB. Could be a great option for them. Be the best 14 in the game.

I’ve seen Andrew Voss and a couple of other media personalities SUGGESTED we’d be the ideal fit for Wighton, but I haven’t read any actual links.

Look they’re probably right, he’d go great next to Nico, I just dont see how we’d afford him.

I think he ends up staying.

So far Fitz used the big chunk of cash he inherited to grab Nicho and Dale and other than that what we have seen so far is happy to spend the money to retain players we have who are playing well. I don't think Wighton fits our cap currently either.

While we have only had Fitz a short time he hasn't shown us anything yet which would indicate he is the kind of guy to throw big sums at 3-4 players and then try and fill the gaps with whoever he can afford.

But his mentor Robbo is more that technique. Bellamy too.
But I think even if he would build a team this way more likely he spends another year or two sorting out what he has got and getting a base down before he starts doing it.

Yep. Doesn't fit our cap and we have two very talented guys (Dykes and Trindall) on the books.

Would be a brain dead decision to recruit Wighton imo, as good as he is.

Yeah, look even if we get Moylan off the books a year early plus with Graham probably retiring. Because of all the contract upgrades, including Nico’s which would be significant. The math just doesn’t add up to fit Wighton’s million dollar contract in.

Plus it seems obvious Fitz has plans for Trindall, one can assume its likely as Hynes’s long term halves partner. If not him, maybe Dykes, Atkinson or Puru.

Get under Sticky's beak by bumping up Wighton's price
I'm not sure anyone could really compete with the Dolphins on price... bonus for the Dolphins is they probably don't have to offer as much as they would have a month or so ago, as they aren't the basket case feared.

I was only joking really, but if we put in an offer it would add to the list of offers that his manager could wave under Sticky's beak during negotiations with Canberra.

I'd imagine that an offer from a strong club, with a shot at the title, a well-liked coach, in a beach side location, and with a happy group of players, might not have to be as high to be competitive.

I think he'll stay at Canberra.

Hed' genuinely be a good fit for them, too. They have young halves that would learn a lot, he's not going to play for too much longer, and maybe he'd play a role in developing junior talent afterwards.

But I don't think he leaves Canberra in any case... the whole thing is a bit weird. I can only put it down to his agent trying to bump up and/or extend his final contract, or he's been told next year will be his last (which seems doubtful).

Be interesting to see how their cap is allocated given you need to spend a certain amount.
