I've been wondering this for a while, and I wanna hear what the forum thinks.

It get mentioned on here a fair bit - "I wanna get some autographs after the match."

But is the humble autograph still revelant in 2016?

I understand that there still is place for getting memorabilia signed and therefore increasing its value.

But I'm not talking about that.

I'm asking - you're hanging around the sheds after the game, waiting for you'd favourite Sharks player to emerge.

When you get your chance do wip out the old pen and paper

or

do you pull out your iPhone and get a selfie?

The point I'm trying to make is what's more impressive at work or school on a Monday - a crumpled bit of paper with a some scribble on it - that may, or may not look like some footy players name

or

a picture of you and Paul Gallen?

Me gards and deathmoth met et after the penrith match. Naturally we got a signature from him, i had him sign my new sharks cap, and since id had a few vb's i got lippy and asked him for $50 since he wrote on it. We also got a quick happy snap with him

Met jack bird also and had a quick chat and a photo but didnt ask for an autograph. Maybe it was just more that we were star struck by the great man.

I would however love to get a full squad to sign a jersey

Interestingly I took youngest daughter to the oz open tennis this year, just ground passes never done anything but centre court before, great experience you watch the practise courts and after they slog it around for a hour or so with all the minders by their side I noticed they wander over with their own pen do like 20-30 autographs then put the pen away and pose for another 15-20 selfie was bizzare, watched it happen half a dozen times during the day with both male and female players, so I guess plenty still keen on both.

Extraordinarily interesting observations.

I wrote a 15,000 word paper on pretty-much this very thing about 4 years ago - in essence, there has been an identifiable paradigm shift in fan culture from "I acquired this" to "I witnessed this."

This is a really interesting psychological shift, and yes, the research that I've read indicates that you've identified a really fascinating cultural trend.

Props!

Reminds me of a picture i saw on facebook. In america at a street parade, hundreds of people with camera phone filming the parade, and 1 old lady actually watching it.

I think in this day and age where everyone carries a camera with them, i like the idea of getting a photo with the person as the momento rather than some scribble. But like i said id love a full squad signed jersey

Go to a concert every second person has their phone out recording it, I have been guilty of recording the odd song too but rarely every look back and watch the particular song.

Do you have a link to that Fitz.?

Do you think attitudes have changed in that 4 years since you wrote it?

I'm too embarrassed to talk or ask for anything, I dont want to annoy them I guess. Perfect example - When Steve Rogers was at the Reds in Perth, I saw him at a game but I didnt want to interrupt him as he was standing quietly on his own eating a burger. STEVE ROGERS!!!! and I was too chicken to even say hi.

Two weeks ago I was at Barbagallos for the V8s. Craig Lowndes and SVG were close enough for me to touch but I was too chicken/star struck to do anything but just stare at them.

It's actually really freaky if you look at it in a more academic way. It's all about validation of self within experience and the individual's transaction with a collective time and moment. To simplify in a crass way, it's a bit like a dog pissing on a tree - it is to say... I was here and this is mine.

Craig lowndes is an absolute champion of a bloke. Always has plenty of time for the fans.

To me its the obsession people have with their own social media accounts, they're more worried about uploading the video they've taken than actually watching the event they've paid to be at.

I look at it as more of a memory. For me personally to look back on something in a few years and remember that time, the experience and the people I shared it with. Memories fade but a video/photo lasts forever.

Its crazy how down to earth some of your idols can be if you have the nerve to say hi.

I used to get things signed when I was a kid but never really held the signature in more high esteem than the experience.

When I see bands I go into the pit for the whole gig and never take photos or videos and I try to make it uncomfortable for those that do. When I meet 'famous' people I admire I say hello and shake their hand and maybe tell them briefly that I appreciate their work.

I don't identify with the concept of taking something from them. Whether it is a photo or an autograph I believe it is the same thing. A transaction. You want to take a piece of them to lord it over the plebs in your life. Steal a tiny piece of fame for yourself as if it will ellivate you above mediocrity, where in reality it just reinforces it.

I'm exactly the same. Every time I run into a player/someone famous in public my first thought is "if i were them would i rather be left alone to what im doing or deal with yet another fan". Im sure its no big deal to them but it must be nice to occasionally get out and not have to deal with it, esspecially away from the field/fan days.

Ever since I was a kid I've never liked the idea of asking for an autograph. Couldn't tell you why.

And I'm not one to take photos on my phone. Go through my gallery and you'll find pics of things the missus wants me to get from the supermarket (what in ****s name is almond milk?)

If I meet someone famous to me, I go for the old handshake and good on ya.
