Hi guys, I haven't posted here before. I have been living with my family in California, SF and have been keeping up with the season through this site and its links and you guys back there have always seemed to have stuff covered.

I am just starting to let myself get excited about what might happen this year, but I just wanted to tell you guys how impressed I have been with your spirit right through the whole Bird thing. Of course we would all love Bird to be cleared so he could play but he has first to level with the club and reading the last thread on the topic it just seemed clear to me from the way you almost unanimously backed Zappia's stance that the Sharks are about a lot more than winning premierships.

To me the Sharks have always been about local content and pride and honour not just winning and I have always been proud of them for that, (except maybe during those Anderson years where it felt like we sold our souls a little in search of the big one. Langy to me just epitomized the Sharks). The Sharks do not buy Premierships, rort the salary cap (how could we?), they don't blame anyone when they lose etc Some things are more important than winning and the Sharks have a genuine spirit which is why particularly if we get to play Manly in the GF I think we will win.

Of course this time of year either way if we win or lose on Friday night the no premierships thing will be brought up. It would be disappointing, even heartbreaking to lose but if it was ever brought up I have always dealt with it this way. i simply pointed out that the Shire won eleven premierships in a row as part of the Dragons in the sixties and were in fact only created in 1967 in order to end this unprecedented dominance, a dominance which not very coincidently ended that year. Maybe that decision worked too well both ways but if you think it's hard not winning a P in 41 years imagine what it would be like watching us win 52 years in a row. I tell them that the real Grand Final is played every year between the Sharks and St George. That usually shuts them up a bit.

Anyway greetings from SF and I think no matter what happens from here all the boys, the club and the supporters have done us proud this year.

Honestly Leagueplayer except for in the Olympics when we were going head to head in the pool you would not know Oz even existed in the US media. No American I have met even knows that there are two distinct versions of Rugby though they do play union here, especially at Cal Berkeley. And their own sportsmen get up to crazy **** every day. The one exception to this is Patty Mills who plays in the Bay Area at St Mary's and has had three big articles in the Chronicle on him since I have been here. My wife and kids actually got their picture on the front of the sport section of the Chronicle when we went to a game. Check out the link, she is the blond with the two kids waving the flag in 'view more images'. Thankfully I missed out. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/02/22/SPOLV0F86.DTL

Shire Shark seems to understand the game maybe more than I would. I actually live in the East Bay so they all go for Oakland Raiders over here or the rich people follow their college football teams. We actually went to the season opener for the 49ers and the pre game was super impressive but the game not so much. I thought RU was stop start. It's good when it happens but there is a lot of standing and chatting.
But they were talking up O'Sullivan in the papers yesterday after they won. I think they are pretty desperate as all the Bay Area professional sports teams pretty much suck at the moment. The High School football is actually more spirited. We live in Piedmont and the local High School team invented what they call the A11 offense where there is a lot more lateral ball movement to get round the line. Apparently a lot of HS teams are copying it. They run all their receivers on one side and one of them acts as a second quarterback, they throw a lateral to him and he can either run or throw the long ball. That kid is actually my next door neighbour. it is wild to see the kids all duded up in that gear, plus they wear purple which is pretty shocking.
They call them the 49ers by the way because 1849 was when the gold rush hit and that was what they called the goldminers. I guess that's why they wear the gold uniform too.
Look Gridiron has some great plays but it doesn't have the sort relentless heroics that say that Broncos Storm game had. Only RL has that as far as I can see.
The Piedmont boys also play Rugby and I saw one of their games and they were pretty good. They had only played like five games but they had all played American Football, soccer, basketball etc so they had some skills and smarts. They really love it too because it's so much more instinctual and team oriented than NFL.

49er, how's it goin.
I am one of the rare forum users in the fact that i actually go for South Sydney in the NRL but i have a lot of time for the Sharks as well.
How's the game of Rugby League going in the states ?
Is it getting popular or will it always be looked at as a novelty by the majority of Americans.
I take a big interest in the AMNRL & i would love to see the game take off over in the states like it has in the UK & Australia.

Coogeeboy I don't see much chance of League getting a hold in the states. They play Union a bit as I said, the HS where I live have a team and Cal Berkeley are the US College powerhouse of Rugby Union. Union could take off among the rich white kids who can afford the coaches, it has that sort of ethos you know. The sports among the affluent are all very geared to whether it helps your kid get into the right college. The white girls all play soccer for that reason, that's why they are the world Champions in womens soccer.

so can someone explain how the sharks can train people into great players yet we get ****ed over for the premiership? honestly this is a joke we are an awesome team yet we lose to cheats who need to do high tackles and be assholes in general its injustice we deserved to win and yet we once again let down our entire fan squad and team due to stupid ****
