Morris twins likely to be let loose against New Zealanders
GREG PRICHARD
April 10, 2010

TWIN brothers Brett and Josh Morris are poised to live the dream of playing a Test match together on home soil, with Josh bursting to the brink of selection for the vacant centre spot in the Australian team to play New Zealand at AAMI Park in Melbourne on May 7.

Unless injury becomes a factor, there is likely to be only one change to the Kangaroos' back line from that which recorded a 46-16 win against England in the Four Nations final at Leeds in November. Justin Hodges played in the centres in that game, but he is unavailable for the Test because of a long-term injury.

Fullback Billy Slater, centre Greg Inglis, wingers Brett Morris and Jarryd Hayne, five-eighth and captain Darren Lockyer and halfback Johnathan Thurston are all set to retain their places. That leaves the centre hole to fill, for which there is a quartet of players in the running - Morris, from the Bulldogs, Penrith's Michael Jennings, Manly's Jamie Lyon and North Queensland's Willie Tonga.

But the Herald understands Morris's excellent start to the season has suitably impressed the right people. Following on from his 22 tries in 21 games for Canterbury in the NRL last season, Morris entered this weekend's round five as the competition's equal-leading try-scorer with six, despite the fact his team has generally struggled and won only one of its four games.

The Morris brothers were members of the Australian squad for the Four Nations campaign, but while St George Illawarra's Brett played in all four games, Josh played in just one, against France. That was the game in which Australian coach Tim Sheens took the opportunity to give squad members who were not in the 'A' team a run.

The twins enjoyed the experience of playing together against the French - scoring two tries each - but the game against the Kiwis would rate as a much bigger occasion for them if they both made it, because the best possible team would be picked.

Jennings was also on that tour. Like Josh Morris his only game was against France, and he scored three tries. Jennings would be expected to push as hard as Morris for selection under normal circumstances, but a knee injury has cast doubt over him.

Penrith have identified their bye week as the most convenient time for Jennings to have a minor operation to fix the problem, but if that happened Jennings would be ruled out of Test contention because their bye is on the same weekend as the Test.

Lyon and Tonga are in good form. They have each represented Australia, but not recently. Lyon last played in a Test in 2007, and Tonga in 2005. That Morris has been a recent member of the Australian squad and continues to improve is tipped to give him an edge.

There are not expected to be many changes to the team that won the Four Nations trophy. The starting front row of props Ben Hannant and Petero Civoniceva and hooker Cameron Smith is expected to remain intact, but there are a few question marks over the rest of the forward pack and the bench.

Utility Luke Lewis played the final in the second row, but he is playing five-eighth for Penrith and it remains to be seen whether that affects his chances. Plus, Parramatta's Nathan Hindmarsh, who played lock in the final, has not been in great early season form.

Second-rower Paul Gallen (Cronulla) and reserve forward Anthony Watmough (Manly) look safe, and reserve forward Sam Thaiday (Brisbane) would appear more likely to survive than not. But another reserve forward, Melbourne prop Brett White, is yet to play this season because of injury, and is unlikely to make it back in time to get enough football behind him going into a Test.

Keith Galloway (Wests Tigers) and David Shillington (Canberra) are among those expected to push for the bench prop spot, while North Queensland lock Luke O'Donnell will be a contender for a spot somewhere in the 17-man squad. Newcastle's Kurt Gidley filled the bench utility role in the Four Nations final, but he is yet to play this season because of injury. If he can get at least a couple of games in before the team is picked, after round eight, he will probably survive.

LOCKYER TO PULL DOUBLE DUTY

THE will-he-or-won't-he saga of Darren Lockyer's representative future may be revived before the May 7 Test against the Kiwis at Melbourne's new AAMI Park. Lockyer's wife, Loren Pollock, is pregnant. ''She's due the Wednesday after the Test,'' Lockyer said. ''It's something which is very important to me. If you ask me now what I'll be doing, I'd say that I'll be playing the game and then heading home after that.'' Lockyer announced during the week that he was available for all rep matches this year, a commitment that includes the State of Origin series and the end-of-season Four Nations tournament.

Hasler lashes rep fixture
28/04/2010 8:26 PM
Adam Lucius

Manly coach Des Hasler has questioned the NRL's decision to stage his side's round nine blockbuster against St George Illawarra less than 24 hours after up to 17 players across both clubs slug it out in representative matches.

Hasler says players involved in the Australia-New Zealand Test match in Melbourne or the City-Country clash at Port Macquarie – both set down for May 7 – will arrive back in Sydney just six hours before the Sea Eagles host the Dragons at Brookvale Oval on May 8.

Nine Manly players - Brent Kite (Australia), Anthony Watmough (Australia), Josh Perry (Australia), Jamie Lyon (Australia/Country), Jason King (City), Glenn Stewart (Australia/Country), Michael Robertson (Country) Steve Matai (New Zealand) and Kieran Foran (New Zealand) – are likely to be backing up.

The Dragons could have up to eight stars forced to play twice in two days, with Brett Morris (Australia), Beau Scott (Country), Matt Cooper (Country), Jamie Soward, (Country), Michael Weyman (Country), Ben Creagh (Country), Dean Young (Country) and Jason Nightingale (New Zealand) all in line for rep selection.

The match between two title-chasing clubs could turn into a farce if a raft of players are forced to pull out.

The Sea Eagles believe both they and the Dragons should have been given round nine byes.

Instead clubs with fewer representative players, such as Canberra and Cronulla, have been given that weekend off.

"A Test match and a City-Country match on the same night isn't real good for anybody," Hasler pointed out.

"But they're there and again we ask the players to back up 12 hours later to play again."

"It's not only us, St George are in the same position as well."

"Our players will be getting off a plane at 1.30 to attend a game at 7.30."

"To ask players to back up less than 24 hours to play another game is beyond me (but)
I'm only a coach."

"It's not my position to say scrap this (rep game) or that."

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley sympathises with both clubs but said the workload was unavoidable.

"We have this issue every year," Annesley said.

"Because the Test match and City-Country is played on Friday, we always have games on the Saturday."

"We have already scheduled eight byes that weekend."

"It's obviously not possible to give every team a bye."

"While we fully understand the impact on the players and clubs, it is impossible to avoid it entirely."

They weren't really rating Gallen on NRL on Fox last night.

He was either the best or second best forward in the Kangaroos squad last year. Hannant was arguably better. Gallen was definitely the best back rower.

Gallen- second in Metres made this year so far behind Hayne, and 5th in offloads, impressive stats. Will start bench though i reckon for test.

yeh he got no love... ****el del... everyone in his team was either a dragon or a qlder, bias prick

The Dell's team was horrendous. He had no props on the bench, two utilities in Bird and Lewis, as well as Darius Boyd.

Caught a headline that said Tuqiri might be in line for Hayne's wing spot.

I'd guess. I can't think of any better wingers than Tuqiri and Morris so far.

I'll watch and enjoy both the Test and City v Country.

I don't get how footy fans can be so-so about a rep game. Its gotta be better than watching something like last Friday's line up of Dogs v Donkies and Parra v Cowboys

You're a QLD supporter though right?

The AUS sides are just QLD + some NSW back rowers :fergo:

Because we usually win and win well. I think I'd be more in to it if there were six or seven other nations, but playing the same sides each year with similar outcomes just doesn't do it for me.

The fact that I despise half the players on the Australian team doesn't help either.

Same goes for SOO to some extent.

In saying that, I'll still probably watch it because its football on TV.

Test selection looms for born-again Myles - Sydney Morning Herald

Test selection looms for born-again Myles
GREG PRICHARD
April 30, 2010

NATE MYLES is close to completing a turnaround from off-field horror last season to Test player this season.

The Herald has learnt the Sydney Roosters forward is being considered for the 17-man Australian squad to play New Zealand in the Test match at AAMI Park, Melbourne, next Friday. The team will be named on Sunday. Myles is yet to represent his country, but he is proven at State of Origin level, having played 11 games for Queensland over the past four years.

Myles was in disgrace last season, after being found naked and disoriented in the corridor of a hotel on the NSW Central Coast, the morning after attending a Saturday night function. It was also discovered he had defecated in the corridor. Outraged NRL management suspended Myles for six matches and fined his club $50,000.

The suspension cost Myles a place in the Maroons line-up for Origin III. He accepted the punishment and was apologetic, describing what happened as a ''terrible accident'' that was the result of a stomach bug and his having gone through the wrong door.

''It was dark and I was a bit dazed,'' Myles said at the time.

Myles has been in good form for the Roosters. He has become particularly attractive as an option for the selectors because of his ability to play lock, second row or prop with equal effectiveness. The 24-year-old has also built a reputation as a winner at representative level, since Queensland have won every series in which he has played.

The selectors have a lot of thinking to do before settling on a fellow starting prop to go with Petero Civoniceva, plus the starting second-rowers and lock and the three reserve forwards. They usually like to include at least one player among those bench men who is comfortable coming on at either prop or second-row, which is why the 188cm and 106kg Myles is in the frame.

One of the starting prop spots is vacant because of the knee injury to Bulldogs star Ben Hannant, who was certain to fill it, had he been fit. St George Illawarra's Michael Weyman and Manly's Josh Perry are said to be the frontrunners for that spot. Melbourne's Brett White is unlikely to be considered, having played just one game this season because of injury and now a suspension that will keep him out this weekend.

There are numerous players in the running for the second row and lock spots, including Cronulla's Paul Gallen, Penrith's Trent Waterhouse, Penrith's Luke Lewis, Brisbane's Sam Thaiday, Parramatta's Nathan Hindmarsh, Gold Coast's Anthony Laffranchi and Manly pair Anthony Watmough and Glenn Stewart. Those among that group who miss out on the starting spots will be considered for bench spots.

The tremendously versatile Lewis is certain to be in the 17. He started in the second row for the Australian team that won the Four Nations final over England at Leeds in November, but could cover five-eighth, centre or wing if necessary.

Waterhouse and Thaiday can also play anywhere in the pack. Thaiday played off the bench in the Four Nations final. Waterhouse was a member of the touring squad and played in two games during the campaign, but missed the final. Gallen started at lock and Hindmarsh in the second-row in the decider. Watmough came off the bench.
