Sydney FC keen to secure signature of Socceroo star Harry Kewell

Tom Smithies From: The Daily Telegraph June 06, 2011 12:00AM

SYDNEY FC are determined to hijack Harry Kewell's mooted return to Australia, planning a rich offer to tempt Kewell back to his home city.

With the club acutely aware that signing the Socceroos winger would be the glitter-encrusted signing it needs to attract fans back in their thousands, talks that had been held intermittently over the past year or so will now intensify in the wake of revelations yesterday that Kewell has held discussions with the Melbourne Victory.

It's believed Sydney officials contacted the player yesterday and were told he remains completely open-minded, both about whether to return to Australia and if so, to which club.

Sydney officials were reluctant to confirm their talks with Kewell's management yesterday for fear of destroying any prospective deal.

But club sources admitted they had been in dialogue for more than a year, and had reaffirmed their interest yesterday in the wake of revelations about Kewell and the Victory.

Kewell is coming off contract with Turkish side Galatasaray, along with fellow Socceroo Lucas Neill, although he was left out of the Australian squad for the games against New Zealand yesterday and Serbia tomorrow.

It's believed Kewell also has offers from the American MLS though has never ruled out a return to Australia. A major attraction would be getting reunited with his family after three years playing in Turkey while his wife and children remained in the UK.

Sydney held talks with Socceroo Brett Emerton recently but those were always dependent on Emerton seeking a release if Rovers were relegated from the English Premier League.

Rovers's success in staying in the top flight seems certain to stymie any further talks.

He did put it in the off topic > Other sports section.

Ok fair enough, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a RUGBY LEAGUE forum.

I see soccer as the enemy and would of thought that Harry Kewel signing for Sydney FC wouldn't be in the best interests of Rugby League.

Soccer the enemy?

AFL is more of an enemy to league than soccer will ever be.

Anybody who thinks that a legend that Harry Kewell is wouldn't be fantastic is living in fantasy land.

If you don't like seeing posts like that here, then stay out of the off-topic & other sports section.

he is injury prone, very injury prone, i had years of agonising kewell-ness when he was at liverpool

also reading soccer forums, galatasary are letting him go as he cant train all the time as he suffers from gout.

it would be a useless signing

I had to see the same when he was at Leeds, Snowman.

I think having him here in Sydney would help him especially with the A-League's short season and his family still live in Sydney as well.

He may be injury prone but when he's on form, he's a bloody fantastic player and I never want to see Melbourne Victory ever get a player of that quality.

Words can't describe how much I hate Melbourne Victory, they're up there with Manchester United and Real Madrid as far as hating them is concerned.

Everything about the Victory is pure scum.

He would be a good signing just on marketing and attracting people games alone. I would compare that to Israel Folau playing AFL, but unlike Folau, Kewell at least knows how to play the sport he is being paid to play!
