This is an extremely poorly researched piece of sensationalist journalism. The suggestion that the Sharks could not afford to pay a fine of $2M (if it even was that much) is incorrect.
The Club has a $300M development underway which would be more than enough collateral to borrow against and the future income would service the debt.
Also, the circumstances of Cronulla and Essendon are completely different. The allegations against the Sharks are based on the actions of individuals without permission or knowledge of the Club. Difficult to see how they can fine the Club for the actions of individuals.
Finally, the suggestion that this would be the best way to restructure the Sydney teams of the NRL is ludicrous. Of the nine Sydney teams, there are few that make as much sense as the Sharks. They stand alone geographically, have their own home ground and a secure financial future. They don't have to share two, three or even four home grounds as other clubs do.
On the other hand, why does it make sense to have 5 clubs who are all located within 15km's of each other? (Roosters/Souths/St George/Tigers/Canterbury). It is ridiculous. The NRL would be creating a void in the Sutherland Shire and handing it straight to the AFL - which is exactly where my money and support will go if the Sharks are moved.
