Unheralded Cronulla centre Ben Pomeroy has emerged as a bolter for the NSW Origin side after starring in the Sharks' come-from-behind win over Gold Coast on Sunday.
The powerful back scored two tries and set up another as his team overcame a four-point deficit early in the second half to run out comfortable 30-14 victors at Toyota Stadium.
With Mark Gasnier in doubt for Origin II on June 13 due to a hamstring injury, NSW great Peter Sterling called for Blues selectors to take a close look at Pomeroy.
Sharks coach Ricky Stuart endorsed the push.
"I don't know what they're (NSW selectors) thinking but he showed there (today) that he is a very competitive kid," Stuart said.
"He's a big, strong lad on the edge (of the ruck)."
"He's got the size and strength and we've just got to work on his finesse as a centre."
"He works hard at his game and it was nice to see him get a couple of tries."
Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen said of Pomeroy's Origin prospects: "He'd grab it with both hands. He set up a try as well as scoring two so he's probably in there with a chance."
But Pomeroy later dismissed his chances, pointing out Jamie Lyon and Joel Monaghan were probably in front of him.
The Blues' 18th man from Origin I, Luke Lewis, is also among the candidates.
"I'd love to play but I'm not too sure if they will pick me," Pomeroy said in the victorious Cronulla dressing room.
"I'm sure if I got a go I wouldn't let them down but we’ll see what happens."
"You've got to get a lot of things right here (in club football) before you can play Origin."
"You've got to hope for injuries when you've got guys like (Mark) Gasnier and (Matt) Cooper in the centres. It's pretty tough to get in there."
"They've been talking up Jamie Lyon and Joel Monaghan. I don’t worry about it too much."
The NSW side will be named on Tuesday morning.
