Charge against NRL player Waqa dismissed
March 19, 2010 - 11:14AM
AAP

Former Sydney Roosters star Stanley Waqa says he is relieved and surprised after charges that he wounded his wife with a knife were dismissed on Friday.

The big Fijian-born front-rower, 21, now training with the Cronulla Sharks, was accused of recklessly wounding his wife during an argument at their former home in the eastern Sydney suburb of Randwick in October last year.

Waqa's wife, Bernadette Cava, suffered a cut to her left little finger in the incident.

Waverley Local Court heard Waqa began waving a knife at his wife, who was holding one of their young children, during an argument about cigarettes.

But Waqa told the court he had been "mucking about" and he had had no intention of wounding her.

His wife also told the court the argument was light-hearted and the cut was an accident. She has also defended him during previous hearings.

The magistrate accepted their version of events and dismissed the case.

Speaking after the hearing, Waqa said he intended to focus on his rugby and hoped the judgment would help him secure a contract with the Sharks.

"I'm happy, really happy. I didn't expect this," he told AAP.

"I thought, you know, jail.

"My rugby's been on hold ... Cronulla's given me a lifeline, they'll be happy with this.

"The past couple of months it's just been a burden on my shoulders."

As soon as I started reading that I thought 'I remember this, it was only a pissy little cut want it?' and then yeah 'suffered a cut to her left little finger'. If hes good enough sure, why not.

We've all seen the ads. Domestic violence- Australia says no.

I'm not sure we should be taking risks.

I am happy with have got a potentially good player but at the same time I thought we werent taking risks so I cant say I am thrilled. I mean if we were going to sign guys like this then why not Todd Carney? I mean granted Carney was (or is?) a drop kick but this guy pulling a knife on his wife... I will wait a little longer to pass judgement but yeah I am concerned...

Does anyone know any more about this? Someone a while ago updated the Sharks wikipedia entry to include him and also edited his entry to show he plays for the Sharks.

He's listed as part of the top squad.

I haven't heard much since. If there's nothing official I want to remove him from wikipedia as there is no source given for the information.

I can't for the life of me understand how a light-hearted argument ends up with a husband waving a knife around and accidently cutting a finger, even if it is not a serious cut.
Fair enough, the case has been dismissed but are the Sharks really in that bad a predicament that we will sign risky people like this, when we are so desperately trying to rebuild our reputation, particularly when it comes to the way women are treated by our footy players?

He hasn't been listed by the club for any team that I can remember. Not sure where this is up to.

Not charged not guilty of anything couldn't give a toss because recent history has shown no other club would so why should we.

So welcome Stanley, can someone buy him a set of plastic knives and forks for the kitchen.
