All this talk lately about athletes wanting more say on who sponsors them is interesting, in particular the Netballers and Pat Cummins.

I wonder if they'd stick with their morals if the administrators said "fine, we're dropping all of you and you don't get paid".

It's a tough one, it's fine to have morals and to take a stand in what you believe in.

But if it gets in the way of you and your teammates getting paid, or even your competition collapsing, you also need to know when to bite your tongue.

It may have been a publicity stunt, but we said no to sponsorship to Ashley Madison when we were in no position to turn away money

Yeah netball was an interesting one, for a sport that is currently 8mil in the hole. Gina’s cash would have been more than handy.

I remember years ago there was some issue with ET's personal sponsorship (Saucony from memory) vs the Sharks / NSWRL sponsorship.

If Australia mined our own resources we wouldn't have to even pay tax, and I'm sure there'd be a bit left over to sponsor a netball team as well.

Sebastian Vettel was an interesting one the last few years with his environmentalism whilst driving f1 for a Saudi sponsored team.

Thing is they didn't even have an issue with her, was with her deceased old man.

Crazy.
All she needed to do was say those are not my thoughts and distance herself as far as possible from them.

Apparently that was too decent a thing to do

Nevermind how much she does for indigenous communities. That should tell you she doesn't agree with her old man.

That’s like saying but my friend is aboriginal, her mining destroys those communities at the same time - money is nothing to her.

Her making a statement was the least she could do , it’s not hard

Why does she need to? Do you answer for what your parents did/said?

Sebastian Vettel was an interesting one the last few years with his environmentalism whilst driving f1 for a Saudi sponsored team.

I like mature Seb (post Red Bull) and think he is genuine about wanting positive change, he is a good guy and his reasonable views don't offend me and he doesn't come across as preachy or taking a high ground on issues.

But for so many rich celebrities they are happy to take a moral stand after they have already made their millions and been a significant beneficiary from the very thing they are apparently against but expect the everyday 9-5 Joe Citizen earning $60k a year to get on board and make sacrifices when they are probably struggling just to keep the heat on in winter and pay to keep their car on the road.

Actually a few years ago in a race Sebs Ferrari broke down while he was leading (they are V6 Turbo Hybrids in modern era) and he said over the radio "bring back the V10's" - lol was funny as, especially in context of his more recent views

Lewis Hamilton on BLM and 'diversity' despite Mercedes links to Nazis Germany and slavery. Her won't ever mention the violence and corruption within BLM either.

Also goes on about environment but owns and drives V12 luxury cars and used to fly around in a private jet. Major sponsor is Petronas - an oil and gas giant. Lewis also thinks the world is going to end because not everyone enjoys a diet of cabbage and lettuce like him.

Ask any of them to give back the fame, lifestyle & millions they have earned from the sport and they wont - I think they just get bored or feel a bit guilty so need to take a morale stand on some things even if it makes them look like a hypocrite or disingenuous.

Lewis though who I actually like and respect for the most part is just a bit nutty. Bloke does like to play the race card a bit when things go against him despite being the most successful and well paid and supported F1 drivers in history.

The lights at the netball prob wouldn't even be on without mining. However this indigenous netballer - I think her stand is fair enough as Gina is in the family of someone who said something disgraceful about her people and even if Gina has good intentions and apologies or distances herself from her father and his comments or whatever I reckon it would still be uncomfortable and cut to the bone - put yourself in her shoes.

What sort of stuff does she do? Honest question.

I'd imagine in the eyes of these communities her family became disgustingly wealthy on the back of mining land that shouldn't belong to her. Seems like that would be hard to make up for.

I agree but that's not the issue here.

The issue for me is people expecting her to apologise for something that she didn't say. Look, what her old man said was disgusting and tbh I'd say something. But getting your knickers in a knot because someone isn't apologizing for something their parent said is crazy imo.

Mining rights in Australia should not be privatised in my opinion. But while the big mining companies donate enough funds regularly to the political campaigns of both major parties that will never change.

I'd imagine that most donations by mining companies to Indigenous Australian organisations and communities are made as calculated business decisions rather than out of the goodness of their hearts.

Some would be as part of a deal to get projects on aboriginal land over the line and others as strategic investments to improve corporate identity.

I know that I'm only stating the obvious.
