Even mentioning the A-League in the same sentence as the EPL is laughable.

They can’t even compete with the big guns in this country - AFL and NRL.

And they’re even behind their summer competitors - Big Bash and NBL.

10 years ago they were at least competing with those 2, if not beating them.

Can't compare ESL to NRL either although perhaps the gap is closing somewhat?

A-League / NSL is not established like the Premier League and even if the quality were much higher I think a consequence of the market it is in it still wouldn't rate as the most popular spectator sport in Aus

Not every sport can be number 1 at the same time.

I recall when Big Ange cracked the shits and bailed on the Aussie team his big complaint was the lack of investment in the game in this country and that it doesn't seem to change. Thing is that money and resources have to come from somewhere and they aren't unlimited so it's about convincing those that it's a worthy investment.

I'm not bagging domestic sports like A-League or NBL either btw, I would like to see them bigger and better. It's much easier to bag them than find solutions and give your support.

Given how many people play the sport in this country it blows my mind it's not currently worth more investment.

Sorry I missed this.

Its not just competing for bums on seats, its also competing for mainstream media coverage. Outside of the Matildas or Socceroos at a major tournament, the main stream media hate football in this country. Its nuts that even during the NRL and AFL off season, they’re still getting far more coverage than the domestic football competition, mens and womens, I mean I havent even mentioned the Womens A-League yet, the same competition thats produced almost every single one of the Matildas that the media seem to love now. Including Sam Kerr, Mary Fowler and Caitlin Foord. The media in this country are more interested in whether or not Nathan Cleary scratched his arse during his time off then who won the Australia Day Big Blue.

Keep in mind too, football is a WINTER sport, we have to play it in the summer heat here or it’ll be absolutely buried and they’d have no venues available, even if they did, they’d be in no state to host football games with the Rugby League and AFL tearing up the fields beforehand. Playing it in summer affects the quality, the quality of foreigner that clubs can recruit and in some ways the crowd numbers.

As for summer competition, you’ve of course got the cricket, but outside of the Big Bash, I dont think that affects the A-League too much given how little of it is played compared to a full A-League season.

Also don’t sleep on the NBL. The Kings are selling out their home games pretty much every week, that league is back in force and that is competing with the A-League.
Good post!

Sounds like the goalie put their warm up into practice in the game

I saw the score briefly and said to old mate at the pub oh 3 nill up with 8 mins to go in the second half, decent win
and he said nah 3 nill up 8 mins into first half

LOL

I thought 4-0 might have been the final score then it changed to 5 while I was looking at it and I glanced up and saw the time haha

I know it was ordinary opposition but surely they need play with a striker going forward, they looked so much better when Heyman came on in the first leg.

London: Matildas captain Samantha Kerr will face a criminal trial next year for alleged racially aggravated harassment of a police officer, Britain’s Daily Mail has reported.

Kerr, 30, reportedly appeared in a London court on Monday accused of using insulting, threatening or abusive words that caused alarm or distress to a police officer during an incident in Twickenham, south-west London, on January 30.

Do you think the Matildas have a lot more to lose here than the NRL and Spencer Leniu?

Most people already think that all NRL players are meat heads, but part of the appeal of the Matildas is that they have a more wholesome image. So could that all change if she’s found guilty?
