How Steve Rogers was given the unglamorous nickname 'Sludge' was explained by him in a radio interview in 2005:
"I rarely drank early on - some say i've made up for lost time since then. We played a match of the day at the SCG, and went back after the game to Tommy Bishop's place. I collapsed in his lounge room after a few too many drinks, so Maurie Raper kicked me in the ribs and said, 'He looks like a hunk of sludge.'
"At first, Maurie was the only one who called me that, but then it caught on in the press and went from there."
