at the time morris was trying to get to the roosters, buzz and hooper were saying we let prior and him go as we copped the entire penalty this year

i found something online that says our cap is 9.15 mil this year

The Sharks are currently close to their reduced salary cap of $9.15 million after the club copped a $350,000 penalty last year.

but it also says the penalty was on last year

from what i have heard though, gthe majority of the cap penalty is this year, and it is why we wanted rid of dugan or moylan rather than morris

https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...e/news-story/b0532d1a71c7dea76704a3c184928b3c

I'm thinking 9.15 is 9.5 - 0.35 ie the cap before allowances minus fine
Cap is 9.5 but with 0.2 in veteran/development allowances and 0.1 in motor vehicle allowance on top
If we got the full fine applied to this year I can't see how our cap could be 9.15, would have the 9.1, small but important difference.

I heard I think it was Kent (but maybe hooper) say it once but that's it. It may be the case but I'd like to see more information on it, although doesn't seem to be any around

Talakai will get a longer term deal, he did a solid in signing on for one year at a good price

Would a back ended deal say over 3-4 years not achieve a similar outcome for both parties? I spose with the 1 year deal it gives the club and player some clear air and options to review/negotiate later in 2021 and we have a better idea where we stand with the rest of our squad/cap at that point

Plus I think the NRL put in place some tighter measures around back ended deals. Anyways as long as our future offer is fair we should be sweet, most of these young forwards seem to love playing for Cronulla and appreciate the opportunities

Yeah crack down on back ended deals and NRL (supposed) reluctance to allow deals that aren't seen as market value make it tricky.
Back ending in particular ****ed some clubs up big time and NRL went right off them. With a back ended deal you ideally want to be most competitive at the start of it and then hope **** works out towards the end, rather than doing to be able to fit someone and then you later have trouble fitting the next guy.

ie if it was 150k for Talakai then two years on 250k or something then if I'm the NRL I'm asking why he is only worth 150k next year. But if he just happily signs 1 year for 150k then there's nothing to question.
Just made those numbers up don't remember them

nah its 9.1 - there are other article on fox explaining we took a large cap hit for this year so we could fit johnson in last year

never liked back ended deals - too open to abuse and undoes some of the work the salary cap trys to achieve in presenting a level playing field season to season. Also has the potential to turn a club into a basket case for many following seasons which we have seen

If I recall Gasniers contract was back ended making him cheap enough to be squeezed into that Dragons side in 2010 in his first year back in NRL - the year they won the comp and he was good for them that season too

'market value' isn't enough protection from taking advantage of the system in one particular stacked season IMO. what else has NRL done to address the issue (i.e. the crack down) ?

I’m guessing he’s been given the final all clear for the Warriors game after his failed HIA last week? Can anyone confirm this?

If I remember and understand correctly he can't be cleared until around midday today or so.
I think there is a 6 stage process you need to pass through, each stage has to be passed and next can't be done until 24 hours after previous is passed so...

Saturday @ 11am EST game started, so he got concussed a little after that
Sunday can pass stage 1
Monday can pass stage 2
Tuesday can pass stage 3
Wednesday can pass stage 4
Thursday can pass stage 5
Friday can pass stage 6 and be cleared

I think that's how it goes. Each stage has different requirements and allows player to increase workload and type of training they are able to do.

The suggestion this far out that Goodwin may not play probably indicates he had some failures

Pretty close, bit of extra detail to throw in

Stage 1 is after 24 to 48 hrs rest initially.

1. Symptom-limited activity – daily activities that do not provoke or worsen symptoms;
2. Light Aerobic Exercise – for example, walking, exercise bike with heart rate less than ~70% max (no resistance/weight training);
3. Sport Specific Exercise – for example, running drills without risk of head contact;
4. Non-contact training and start resistance (weight) training;
5. Full contact training – ONLY after medical clearance by a doctor using NRL Head Injury Recognition and Referral Form– coaching staff should assess tackling and other skills for correct technique;
6. Return to play/games.

Each stage should be a minimum of 24 hours’ duration.

Like you said, if they fail one they need to wait 24hrs to go again. So if you're playing 5 days after a game you're unlikely to play. And if you fail one you're cutting it close.

Just me or does this guy seem just as/if not more potent getting the ball standing still as he does winding up?

Loved Warren Smith's call on him being like a rhinoceros lol

heaps of power in the legs and a big hard fend can still earn him decent yardage even if he hasn't had much of a wind up

made the most PCM (per run) of our forwards I think and equal (with Rudolf) top tackle breaks for our forwards off barely more than half as many runs

yea he is a machine, I know he has had huge wraps on him in the past but wasnt expecting him to explode outta the blocks like this for us so soon. his carries and defense are immense and seems a clever player

Check out his interview last week if you haven't. Wasn't a matter of talent he just wasn't ready for the pressures of NRL. Now his maturity & mentality has caught up with his physical he's a ****en monster.

looked really strong and aggressive in NSW Cup and I wanted him to get a run but didn't think he transfer it across at the same sort of level so quickly. Must have really enjoyed preseason.
