Sure, everyone played very well, great team effort. Other players absolutely deserve credit also.
You need points to win so a lot of people will prioritise attaching output over defensive quality, some basically only care about offensive output.

In that game with how good his offensive output was I didn't hold his defence against him.
At this stage I am happy for him to hold the jersey and hopefully build his reads and confidence and iron out any defensive kinks.
If he starts getting torn up for points (directly or indirectly) too often I will turn on him.
Fair call. I'm ok with anyone (everyone) else on here picking him. Just calling out that it is a perfectly reasonable position for myself (or the 13% of Sharks members) to say "I think Talakai was great by I reckon this other bloke had a bigger impact because he laid the platform/controlled the game/created the opportunities".

*

* Far from a punch up btw gents. This how discussions are supposed to work. bort makes a point, I consider it and try to offer a reasonable response. I make a point and he does the same. No name calling or low blows. Almost like we actually value each other's opinions and respect each other's positions without necessarily having to agree. Fancy that :)

I'm not holding it against him. I'm saying that others were responsible for creating the time and space for him and that played a bigger part. The Sharks won that game because of ruck dominance and not because a centre had some great touches in space. Sure he was great with ball in hand - but there were several others who were outstanding with the ball AND in defence and that in my opinion contributed more to the win.

I'm aware that most people see the game differently than I do. That's fine with me. It's not surprising to me at all that the big guy who makes barnstorming runs gets the accolades. That's how most people see footy. Talakai was certainly one of the best performers so a majority vote for MoM is a fair result. It doesn't mean the minority is wrong or out of touch though.
I totally agree that the ball is getting to the right place at the right time these days, but I think it's underselling Talakai's efforts to say that it played a bigger part. He wasn't purely being put through holes untouched (those 17 TB's weren't Fif style lateral travel palm-offs, tied 2nd for post-contact metres and had 2 offloads), his passing was excellent, his 21 runs weren't all on the edges (though they recorded 1 HU... wtf does that stat actually mean?), showed a good bit of toe and only missed 3 tackles while playing against Gagai, probably shutting down the only attacking weapon Newy had... while playing out of position! (I know they say he's grown up a centre, but we know that's different from slotting in there in first grade from the second row).

I completely respect the way you look at player contributions and not highlight reels, I like to do the same, but Burgo...mate... anyone who gives us the tingles like Talakai did gets my 3 with a tip!

He played there plenty in 2019 for the Jets. Different level, but it's not like he is a complete pumpkin playing there. He has some idea.

...but... performances like last week were the norm for him when he played centre for the Jets. Complete weapon in attack but got carved up in defence.

Maybe I just get tingles off different things than you do (like every time they run that 3-pass play through the middle forwards).

I get those tingles too :)
I think you're still downplaying things a bit. Carved up in defence isn't really reflected in the result or the stats, but I know, I know... we don't want to get too carried away with the shiny new toy. That performance was only possible because of the effort areas and fundamental skills and technique being nailed across the whole team for the full 80 minutes. I'm a huge believer in that, and firmly believe getting those things right is the reason why our middling players look like origin prospects this year, and why Melbourne can take a raw kid showing some talent and turn him into hot property on the player market (besides the two books, free boats and diamond rings for wives)

As a very young bloke In 1979, I remember hearing some high school thugs talking about the Sharks. One of them said ā€œThis Kurt Sorensen bloke is unstoppableā€. I thought pfffftt, nobody is unstoppable.

Well 43 years later I finally saw the closest thing I have seen to a player be unstoppable -

Siosifa Talakia V Newcastle Knights April 1 2022.

Glenn Huckstepp, apologize for labeling your sentiments ludicrous 43 years ago.ā€¦..

@burgess1978 out of curiosity who was your 3-2-1?
Some combo of Moylan, Talakai, Mulitalo, Brailey, Finucane, Rudolf, Uele.

I get those tingles too :)
