Shuttlewood wants a full-time spot

PINT-sized Sunshine Coast Falcons fullback Adam Shuttlewood is hoping his performance in tomorrow’s trial against a Melbourne Storm side will help him cement a permanent position in the representative arena.

The Caloundra Sharks custodian will make his Falcons debut in the pre-season trial at Wises Road and knows a good showing will go a long way in helping him become a regular Falcon.

The Falcons assembled just over a week ago for the first time under coach Des Allen, and Shuttlewood admitted it would be tough for the side to bond at such short notice.

“We’re trying to get to know each other and gel as a team,” he said yesterday.

“But I’m really looking forward to the challenge of playing against the NRL quality players. We’re expecting it to be pretty tough.

“Hopefully, this leads to more Falcons games for me. This is sort of a trial to get picked in the side later in the year.

“I’m looking forward to playing at the next level, really.”

The Falcons will face Melbourne Storm’s NSW Cup side and the visitors are expected to play a bruising style of football in an attempt to impress first-grade coaches as they head into the NRL season.

Allen, who will coach Nambour’s A-grade side this year, said he was surprised how well his 23-man squad had combined despite having only two training sessions.

“They’ve come together really good, it’s very pleasing,” he said.

“We finally had one training session where it didn’t rain. We’ll have another short, sharp one tomorrow night (tonight).

“They’re all enjoying it and that’s all I can ask. They’re showing plenty of enthusiasm. That’s the main thing.”

Allen said the match would also serve as an opportunity for Sunshine Coast’s players to showcase their talent.

“Melbourne will perform, they’re a pretty professional outfit,” he said. “But it’s also a chance to see a couple of our blokes step up to the mark.”
