Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan admits his club dodged a bullet in parting company with Stephen Dank shortly before the controversial sports scientist became a central figure in the Essendon drugs furore.
Dank, who first came to prominence at Manly in the mid to late 2000s, joined Essendon after leaving Cronulla and now finds himself under fire for overseeing the Bombers' questionable supplement and sports science program during the 2012 pre-season.
Essendon is under investigation from ASADA and the AFL after flagging potential illegalities connected to the supplement program.
While not accusing Dank of any wrongdoing, Flanagan praised Cronulla's medical and training staff for ending the association before it developed further.
"I don't want to criticise other clubs by coming out and saying we were the smart ones but we did escape before he (Dank) got his claws in," Flanagan told Sportal on Wednesday.
"We've got some things in place with our doctor and physio and they're across the medical side of things and the use of supplements.
"They take control of that - that's the way we run.
"He (Dank) wasn't involved with us in any official capacity. He just helped us source some GPS data and GPS equipment and helped us with the purchase of equipment for our gym.
"That's as far as it went."
Dank worked at Manly for five years at the invitation of then coach Des Hasler, but there is no suggestion of any irregularity.
The Sea Eagles reached two grand finals during Dank's stint, taking out the 2008 title with a record 40-0 win over Melbourne.
"The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles employed Stephen Dank in an official capacity as a consultant between 2006 and 2010," the club said in a statement on Wednesday.
"During that time, we never had any concerns.
"We always complied with all anti-doping protocols of the WADA Code and the NRL.
"The club will make no further comment."
