What do we all think of the short dropouts today?

Should we keep doing it and trust our defence?

My thoughts are that is good against the lower ranked sides, but might not be a good idea against the Storm, Roosters or Broncos.

But the way Moylan sets them up and executes gives us a good chance every time.

No brainer, keep doing it unless you have a strong wind behind your back.

Teams prefer defending on their line these days so no biggie if you don't get the ball back.

Definitely worth the gamble.

In my opinion nrl teams are behind the times, all dropouts and kickoffs should be like this. If there is a 50/50 chance of getting the ball back, you take it.

I liked them today. It showed a sense of urgency for mine, and a willingness to play some attacking football. My opinion is likely to change though depending on if they pay off or not.

Yes, coach said in the post match he encourages it if the players feel they can get it right..

A nice encouraging change to a generally predictable outcome. Good to see there doing their homework rather than getting on the gear. So that's a yes from me.

Have always liked it. Even if the ball is drop kicked as far as the halfway line, the receiving team usually runs as far as the 30 metre line (sometimes more), before the first tackle is completed anyway. Arguably, that is also a better position to set up an attack from. We just have to make sure it goes the minimum 10m and not give away a penalty in front of the posts.

They could try a variation of drilling the ball along the ground towards the sideline.
If it goes out it’s a scrum and our feed I believe.

Definately.
Any time you have a 50/50 chance of getting the ball back go for it. They should be doing short kick offs all the time as well.

Dunno about short kick offs. I think better off pinning the opposition down their end in that situation unless you're chasing points.

If the boys wanna do it and are getting more balls back than they are conceding tries then I'm happy for them to do it.

Kick offs I'm more dubious about than dropouts...

Good in short term, need to mix it up, otherwise they will expect the short drop
even if they expect it we still a good chance of knocking it back and retrieving it. if they bring too many defenders forward kick it long it open space

yep

the defending team often dawdles out from the goal line to meet the initial ball carrier

yea and it can force the side line defender to get themselves in 2 minds about attacking the ball or leaving it and forces a mistake
we actually use to do the short grubber drop out wide of the posts over the last few seasons. we would randomly employ it (dunno if Flanno liked it), usually towards Wade with some success

agree, it's not worth it unless your desperately chasing points with the timer running down
